  • Spaced repetition. The scheduler calculates the interval before each card is shown again based on how well you remembered it. Cards you find difficult appear more often, and easy ones less often, which improves long-term retention.
  • Cross-platform sync. Lets you access your cards on different devices through a free AnkiWeb account. Changes are synchronized when you start a sync, so your progress stays consistent across devices.
  • Advanced customization. You can edit card templates, styles, and note types, and add your own fields, to adapt the cards to your specific needs. Templates use HTML and CSS.
  • Multimedia support. Supports images, audio, video, and mathematical formulas (LaTeX and MathJax) on cards.
  • Detailed statistics. Shows charts and data about your progress, including the number of cards reviewed, review forecast, and answer accuracy.
  • Shared decks. Gives you access to a public library of decks created by other users, covering a wide range of subjects.
  • Flexible study options. Lets you learn new cards, review existing ones, or focus on difficult ones using filtered decks and custom study sessions. Daily limits for new cards and reviews can be adjusted.
  • Add-ons. Supports third-party add-ons that extend the features of the desktop program.
  • Import and export. Lets you move decks between devices or share them in formats such as .apkg, as well as import text and CSV files. Decks can also be exported as plain text.
  • Dark mode. Reduces eye strain with a dark interface during long study sessions.

Anki was created by Damien Elmes and first released in 2006. The desktop version is written in Python and Rust and uses the Qt toolkit for its interface. The project is open source and is still actively developed, with regular updates that improve stability and add new features.
