  • Expansion card support. The emulator lets you configure expansion cards such as the Disk II, Language Card, and sound cards. Each peripheral can be enabled or disabled as needed.
  • Disk and tape management. Lets you load disk images in formats such as .dsk and .nib, as well as .wav tape files. Virtual disks can be modified and saved.
  • Configurable video modes. Supports the original Apple II video modes, including text and low- and high-resolution graphics. Video output can be adjusted in size and filters.
  • Sound emulation. Recreates Apple II sound through the Mockingboard card and the internal speaker. Audio quality can be configured to reduce distortion.
  • Screenshots and recording. Lets you save screenshots in BMP format and record gameplay sessions as video. Screenshots capture the exact state of the emulated screen.
  • Built-in debugger. Includes tools for debugging programs, such as a disassembler, memory monitor, and breakpoints. Useful for developers and enthusiasts.

  • Network emulation. Lets you simulate a network connection through Uthernet, making it easier to access online services compatible with the Apple II.
  • Scripting support. Supports automation through scripts, allowing you to control the emulator programmatically for advanced testing.
  • Peripheral compatibility. Emulates devices such as joysticks, mice, and printers, staying faithful to the original hardware.
  • Saved configurations. Emulator settings can be saved in profiles, making it easy to switch quickly between different setups.

AppleWin was originally developed by Michael O'Brien in 1994 and has since been maintained by a community of contributors, notably Tom Charlesworth. The project is written in C++ and its source code is available on GitHub. Over the years, features such as expansion card support, improved sound emulation, and compatibility with modern versions of Windows have been added. The latest stable release includes bug fixes and optimizations to ensure accurate emulation.
