  • Integrated authentication. Boundary supports multiple authentication methods, including LDAP, OIDC, and passwords. Users can log in using external identity providers or local credentials stored securely.
  • Role-based access control. Administrators define roles with specific permissions to access resources. Each role can have time, location, or connection type restrictions.
  • Dynamic session proxy. Boundary acts as an intermediary between the user and the resource, eliminating the need to set up a VPN. Connections are established on demand and terminated automatically.
  • Detailed activity logging. All sessions are recorded with metadata such as user, time, IP address, and executed commands. Logs can be exported to external monitoring systems.
  • Integration with Vault. Boundary can retrieve temporary credentials from HashiCorp Vault, reducing the risk of exposing permanent passwords or SSH keys.
  • Scalable architecture. Boundary components can be deployed in clusters to handle large volumes of simultaneous connections without performance degradation.
  • CLI and API interface. Boundary offers a command line and a RESTful API to automate access management tasks and integrate with other tools.
  • Logical network segmentation. Resources are organized into projects and collections, allowing grouping of targets by function, team, or security level.
  • Cross-platform connectors. Supports connections to Linux, Windows systems, databases, and web applications using standard protocols such as SSH, RDP, and HTTP.
  • Configurable security policies. Access rules can include MFA requirements, geographic restrictions, or session time limits.

Boundary was developed by HashiCorp and released in 2020. It is written primarily in the Go language (Golang). The tool is part of the HashiCorp ecosystem, integrating technologies such as Terraform, Consul, and Vault. Its development continues with regular updates that add features and security improvements.
