The development of EdenMath began in the 1990s, initially as freeware software for classic Mac OS systems. The principal programmer was William H. Smith, founder of EdenWaith. In 2002, version 1.1.1 adopted the GNU General Public License (GPL), which allowed modifications of the distributed source code. Robert Burns later created an adaptation of EdenMath for the GNUstep environment based on this publicly available source code.
