  • Experimental approach. At this stage, the emulator prioritizes technical accuracy over performance, implementing key PS2 hardware components through interpretation.
  • Advanced debugging. Includes detailed tools for analyzing the virtual hardware, allowing you to trace CPU, GPU, and other component operations.
  • Modular architecture. Designed with separate components for the Emotion Engine, Graphics Synthesizer, and other chips, making individual improvements easier.
  • Basic game support. Currently runs compatible titles at reduced speeds due to the lack of JIT compilation.
  • Gradual hardware fixes. Recent fixes to the DMAC (Direct Memory Access Controller) have expanded game compatibility.
  • Technical visualization. Provides detailed information about the state of the emulated hardware during execution.
  • Extensive logging system. Generates detailed logs for post-execution analysis and troubleshooting.
  • Accurate memory management. Emulates the main memory and cache systems with attention to original behavior.
  • Timing control. Implements synchronization mechanisms between components, although with current speed limitations.
  • Development interface. Offers tools for emulation researchers and developers.

The Iris project began development in 2025 as an independent initiative. Its creator, known as allkern, developed it primarily in C++ with an emphasis on technical accuracy. The first public version appeared after seven months of continuous work. Unlike other emulators, Iris initially prioritized debugging capabilities over game performance, although its roadmap includes implementing JIT compilation and hardware-accelerated rendering.
