  • Kernel-level encryption. The core of the technology operates within the operating system kernel, specifically in the keyboard driver path. This deep position ensures that every keystroke is encrypted before any other process, legitimate or malicious, can intercept it. Encryption occurs at a point before traditional keyloggers, even rootkit-based ones, perform their capture.
  • Dynamic encryption algorithm. It uses an encryption algorithm that generates unique keys for each application session. The encryption is not static; it varies with each execution of a protected program. This method ensures that even if an attacker managed to capture encrypted data in one session, that data would be useless for future sessions or for other applications.
  • Protection against hardware keyloggers. It mitigates the threat of hardware keyloggers installed between the keyboard and the computer port. By encrypting the signal at the driver, the information traveling through the system bus to the CPU is already obfuscated. A hardware device would capture only the encrypted data stream, not the actual keystrokes.
  • Transparent integration with applications. The decryption component integrates directly with the target application window. This integration is specific and does not affect overall system performance. The user observes normal keystrokes in the text field, with no perceptible delay, while the system handles encryption and decryption in the background.
  • Application-specific protection. The configuration allows selecting which applications should be under protection. The engine identifies running processes and applies the encryption stack only to those on the whitelist. This minimizes resource usage and avoids conflicts with software that doesn't require this security, such as media players or games.
  • Support for web browsers. The Personal edition protects data entry in form fields, address bars, and search boxes within browsers. It covers major rendering technologies, including Blink (Chrome, Edge), Gecko (Firefox), and WebKit. Protection works in individual tabs and pop-up windows.
  • Protection in email and messaging clients. The Premium and Professional versions extend encryption to email clients like Outlook and Thunderbird, and to messaging applications. This ensures that access credentials and message content are not captured while being typed into these specific applications.
  • Encryption in financial and business applications. It offers protection for online banking software, trading platforms, cryptocurrency clients, and accounting suites. Encryption acts when entering account numbers, transfer amounts, institutional account passwords, and other critical financial information.
  • Defense against screen loggers. It incorporates techniques to hinder malware from taking screenshots of input fields. Although its primary function is keystroke encryption, the architecture makes it difficult for other malicious modules to correlate keyboard activity with timed screenshots.
  • Management mode for corporate environments. The Enterprise edition includes a centralized console to deploy policies, update configurations, and audit the protection status on multiple workstations. It allows IT administrators to define lists of protected applications and generate compliance reports.
  • Runtime integrity checking. The engine periodically verifies the integrity of its own components in memory and on disk. This verification detects attempts at code injection or application patching by malware trying to disable the protection.
  • Protection of system credentials. It applies encryption during credential entry in operating system dialogs, such as the User Account Control (UAC) prompt, the Windows login screen, and network authentication dialog boxes. This prevents the theft of domain or local account passwords.
  • Process exclusion. It allows creating a list of excluded processes where keystroke encryption will not be activated. This feature is necessary for applications that use low-level keyboard input methods that might be incompatible, such as certain types of virtualization software or automation applications.

KeyScrambler was developed and is maintained by QFX Software Corporation. The initial development of the technology began in 2005, with the first public release of KeyScrambler occurring in August 2006. It was the first commercial product available focused exclusively on keystroke encryption as a defense against keyloggers. The founders of QFX Software have backgrounds in computer security and low-level systems engineering. The program is primarily written in C++, with critical driver components developed in C to ensure stability and performance in the kernel environment.
