Metabase

Metabase — Free Download. Business Data Visualization
Metabase is an analytics and business intelligence tool that allows teams to query, segment, and visualize datasets from multiple sources. The application runs on a local server accessed through a web browser and does not require manual writing of complex SQL queries for most standard operations. It is designed for corporate environments that need centralized metrics and shared dashboards.

  • Ad Hoc Questions. The system allows users to ask specific questions about data using a visual query builder. The engine translates interactions with fields and tables into queries in the database's native language, returning results in a table or statistical summary format.
  • Dynamic Dashboards. Dashboards bring together multiple charts and tables in a single view. Elements can be filtered interactively by applying a date range or a specific category, updating all dashboard components simultaneously.
  • Data Modeling and Custom Fields. Administrators can define calculated fields, establish relationships between tables, and create custom metrics to simplify subsequent work for analysts. This modeling layer unifies business criteria such as revenue calculation or cost per acquisition.
  • Automatic Chart Generator. When a query is run, the tool selects the most suitable type of visual representation based on the nature of the data. The user can switch between line charts, bar charts, area charts, heat maps, or pivot tables with a single click.
  • Advanced Segmentation and Filters. Filters can be applied to any column available in the database. The system supports filtering by date ranges, categories, numerical values, or boolean conditions, allowing users to narrow down datasets without writing code.
  • Library of Questions and Referenced Tables. Saved questions can be reused as data sources for new queries. This functionality allows for building progressive analysis layers, where a complex visualization is based on previously calculated results.
  • Scheduled Alerts and Notifications. Users can configure alerts that trigger when a metric exceeds a defined threshold. It is also possible to schedule email deliveries of complete reports or full dashboards at daily, weekly, or monthly intervals.
  • Access Control and Permissions by Level. User management distinguishes between viewing, editing, and administrative roles. Permissions can be granular at the table or column level, restricting access to sensitive information such as personal or financial data.
  • Connection to Multiple Database Engines. The platform supports native connectors for relational and analytical systems such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Amazon Redshift, Google BigQuery, SQL Server, and cloud databases. The connection is established using host, port, and securely stored credentials.
  • REST API for External Integration. Metabase exposes an API that allows for executing queries, retrieving results in JSON format, and managing users programmatically. This interface facilitates integration with third-party applications or the automation of administrative tasks.
  • Caching and Query Acceleration. Results from the most frequent queries are stored in a configurable cache. This functionality reduces the load on the primary database and speeds up the display of the most commonly used dashboards.
  • Metadata Exploration and Data Lineage. The interface includes a schema explorer showing tables, their columns, and data types. Administrators can document each field with descriptions that appear as contextual information for end-users.

Development of Metabase was initiated in 2014 by co-founders Sameer Al-Sakran and Breanden Benesch. Both came from previous experiences in technology companies where they identified the need to democratize access to data without depending on engineering teams. The first stable version was released in 2015, and since then the project has maintained a continuous update cycle. The application is primarily written in Clojure, a functional programming language that runs on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). The frontend, for its part, is developed with JavaScript and the React framework.
