ShadPS4 — Free Download. PS4 Emulator for PC
ShadPS4 is a PlayStation 4 emulator developed for Windows and Linux systems. This software makes it possible to run PS4 games and applications on a personal computer by translating the console's hardware and firmware instructions into an x86-64 environment. The project focuses on accuracy, compatibility, and performance, allowing users to enjoy exclusive PS4 titles on their PCs, provided they own legitimate copies of the games dumped from a modified console.

  • CPU emulation. The CPU implementation is based on dynamic recompilation (JIT) of the PS4 instruction set (AMD64 Jaguar) into native instructions of the host processor. This core emulates the eight cores of the original hardware and handles the thread scheduler, cache memory, and execution units, achieving efficient translation that preserves game logic and synchronization between processes.
  • GPU emulation. The graphics component converts calls to the PS4 graphics APIs (GNM/GNMX) into Vulkan, a modern, high-performance graphics API. This process includes shader translation, vertex and index buffer handling, texture management, and implementation of the console's rendering operations, preserving visual fidelity and post-processing effects.
  • Virtual memory manager. The virtual memory system replicates the PS4 memory architecture, allocating and protecting memory regions for the operating system, games, and user-space processes. This manager controls memory allocations, access permissions, and address translation, a key component for stability and for preventing conflicts between different parts of the emulation.
  • Virtual file system. Emulates the PS4 file system and I/O calls, allowing games to access their data as if they were running on the original console. This includes simulating the directory structure, handling file permissions, and emulating storage devices, which is necessary for loading assets, settings, and game saves.
  • Controller emulation. Translates input from PC devices (keyboard, mouse, compatible gamepads) into the signals that PS4 software expects from the DualShock 4. The emulation handles vibration, the light bar, touchpad functionality, and connectivity, providing a complete control experience.
  • Audio emulation. Processes PS4 audio calls through a layer that converts the audio into a format playable on PC hardware. This system handles channel mixing, 3D sound effects, and output to different devices, ensuring that game audio is played in sync and without distortion.
  • Network and PSN services emulation. Implements a virtual local network and emulates components of the PlayStation Network online services for games that require network features. This enables local multiplayer, patch downloads, and activation of online content within a controlled environment isolated from Sony's real network.
  • Achievements and trophies system. Emulates the PS4 trophy subsystem, allowing games to unlock achievements just like on the original console. The system tracks progress, manages the trophy data file, and can display unlock notifications, preserving this feature of the PlayStation ecosystem.
  • PS4 Pro compatibility. Offers an emulation mode that replicates the enhanced capabilities of the PlayStation 4 Pro, such as resolutions above 1080p and more stable frame rates in patched games. This feature adjusts the emulated GPU parameters and resource management to simulate the upgraded hardware.
  • Debugging and logging tools. Includes a set of utilities for developers and advanced users that allows you to log emulator activity, inspect memory state, and debug crashes. These tools generate detailed log files and provide data dump options that make it easier to identify compatibility issues.
  • Graphics performance settings. Provides options to adjust the internal rendering resolution, apply upscaling techniques such as FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution), and change the quality of texture filtering. These settings let you balance visual quality and performance according to your hardware capabilities.
  • Patch and mod support. Integrates a system that allows code patches to be applied to games at runtime. These patches can fix incompatibilities, enable unsupported features, or change game behavior, such as unlocking the frame rate or adjusting graphics settings.
  • Command-line interface (CLI). Offers a version of the emulator that can be operated entirely from the terminal or command prompt. This interface accepts configuration parameters, allows script execution, and makes task automation easier, aimed at technically skilled users or for use in environments without a graphical interface.
  • Multiple user profile management. Emulates the PS4 user profile system, allowing you to create and switch between different accounts within the emulator. Each profile keeps its own save data, settings, and trophies, which is well suited to multi-user environments or to keeping game progress separate.
  • System time synchronization. Emulates the console's real-time clock and game-time clock. This feature gives games an accurate time source for scheduled events, daily systems, and any mechanic that depends on the passage of time, maintaining temporal consistency.

Development of ShadPS4 began in 2022. The project was started by a developer known as "shad", who laid the foundations of the emulator's core. Over time, a team of contributors joined the project, working on specific areas such as graphics emulation, audio, and system libraries. Development is active, with frequent updates that improve compatibility and performance. ShadPS4 is written mainly in the C++ programming language, taking advantage of its performance and low-level control for critical emulation tasks.

Changelog

Version: 0.20.0
  1. Full SSE4a CPU patches are now applied on macOS, and static patching is enabled on Linux.
  2. The (V)RCPPS and (V)RSQRTPS instructions are patched on Intel processors.
  3. Game ID resolution is faster, and NpHandler is shut down before a restart.
  4. The FPS counter is anchored from startup, and its movement check has been refactored.
  5. On Windows, protections are restored after a mapped region is split, and on POSIX the host mmap range is no longer expanded when unmapping.
  6. The kernel implements POSIX file attribute and sync APIs, plus thread context, naming, file and process APIs and private pthread barriers.
  7. Guest paths are normalized and mount matching is fixed.
  8. The source pointer now advances for every backing run in TryWriteBacking.
  9. The unused signaling_info setting is removed, and SIGABRT signals are logged on POSIX.
  10. The sceNet library is completely rewritten with P2P support, and a monotonic real-time network clock is added.
  11. Signaling always answers the offer, the sign-in dialog returns basic errors, and a matching delay is added.
