  • Survey data processing. Therion lets you enter measurements of distances, angles, and elevation changes taken during cave exploration. This data is organized in text files with a specific format. The program automatically calculates survey paths and corrects loop closure errors.
  • 2D map generation. Creates detailed cave plans in different representation styles. It includes walls, geological formations, reference points, and exploration routes. Maps can be exported in vector formats such as PDF or SVG.
  • 3D modeling. Builds three-dimensional representations of cave systems from the survey data. Models can be rotated and examined from different angles. It supports export to formats compatible with 3D visualization software.
  • Complex project management. Therion handles caves with multiple entrances and interconnected systems. It lets you split large networks into sections and then merge them into a coherent map. Each section can be edited separately.
  • Automated legend creation. Generates complete legends with standardized speleological symbols. It includes graphic scales, magnetic and true north indicators, and information about the coordinate system used.
  • Survey error correction. Detects inconsistencies in measurement data, such as closure errors or angular deviations. It provides tools to adjust discrepancies using different compensation methods.
  • GPS device compatibility. Integrates geographic coordinates obtained with GPS receivers to place caves in global reference systems. It supports transformations between different datums and map projections.
  • Export to geographic information systems. Generates files compatible with GIS software, such as Shapefile or DXF. This allows cave maps to be incorporated into broader geological studies or land management systems.
  • Multilingual support. Maps can include text in different languages. Therion handles character encodings to support names and descriptions in non-Latin alphabets.
  • Symbol customization. Lets you modify and extend the standard set of speleological symbols. Users can create new icons to represent specific geological formations or equipment installed in the cave.
  • Technical report generation. Produces documents with survey metadata, including measurement dates, equipment used, and accuracy achieved. These reports follow standardized formats used in speleological documentation.

Therion was created by the speleologist and programmer Stacho Mudrák, with Martin Budaj among its main contributors. Development began in the late 1990s, and the software is written in C++, with Tcl/Tk used for its graphical tools and MetaPost and LaTeX used for map rendering. Over the years, it has incorporated contributions from many speleologists and specialized cartographers. The first stable version was released in the early 2000s. The project is free and open source, and it remains active, with regular updates that add new features and improve the accuracy of survey calculations.
