  • Snapshot-based backups. Each backup operation creates a point-in-time snapshot of the project folder. The system compares files against the previous snapshot to identify added, modified, or deleted items. This data is stored in a SQLite database and presented to the user with detailed change summaries.
  • History with encryption context. The backup history distinguishes between full, incremental, imported, and encrypted copies. Each entry indicates whether the backup is password-protected and shows the encryption type applied. History logs can be exported as plain text or JSON for external audits.
  • Retention policies and protected backups. Administrators define how many recent backups to keep per project. Backups marked as "Keep" are excluded from automatic pruning. Retention simulation shows which copies will be deleted before cleanup runs.
  • Multi-destination routing. Each project can send snapshots to specific locations: auto mode, fixed destination, or multiple destinations simultaneously. Supports local storage, SMB network drives, and NFS with auto-mount using credential profiles on Windows and macOS.
  • Encryption with auto-lock. Backups can be password-encrypted per project or globally. The restore flow requires the password to open the archive. The system includes an auto-lock timeout and a manual lock button to protect data.
  • Snapshot diff summaries. For each time interval, VaultSync generates a report listing added, modified, and deleted files, net size transferred, and most changed paths. This summary can be exported as text or JSON for external analysis.
  • CLI watch mode. The command-line interface provides a watch mode. Any change in the project folder triggers an automatic sync using rsync on macOS/Linux or robocopy on Windows. Suitable for servers or automated processes without a graphical interface.
  • Smart inclusion/exclusion presets. Predefined rules mimicking .gitignore for specific environments: Unity, .NET/C#, game engines (Godot, Unreal, GameMaker), Node, Python, Rust, Java, Go, Blender, video editing, music DAWs, and general development setups (VSCode, JetBrains, Docker). "No preset" option disables all exclusions.
  • Bandwidth limits and quiet hours. Upload speed can be limited and time intervals defined where automatic backups are blocked. Policy status is shown in control cards, system tray, and activity logs.
  • Metadata sync across machines. The .vaultsync/meta folder allows configuration sharing between different computers. Each imported backup records the source machine. Includes metadata conflict resolution and a "Doctor" repair flow for inconsistencies.
  • Hash-based file verification. During CLI sync, each file is validated with its hash to ensure integrity. In the desktop UI, startup integrity scans and diagnostic tools verify snapshot consistency.
  • Adaptive compression by file type. Backup archiving applies different compression algorithms based on file extension. Already compressed files (images, video, audio) receive minimal or no extra compression to save time. Text and source code files are compressed to maximum.
  • Checkpoint resume for transfers. Parallel archive uploads can resume chunk by chunk if the connection fails. Compression progress for large files is reported in real time. The system skips files that disappear during scanning to avoid errors.
  • Storage health diagnostics. The backup view shows health indicators for each destination drive. For network drives or mapped disks, the system explicitly indicates when health metrics cannot be retrieved. Support bundle export collects logs and configuration for remote diagnosis.
  • Microsoft Store compatibility. VaultSync includes packaging for Microsoft Store distribution. Runtime detection determines whether installation came from the Store or direct download. Store builds disable the GitHub self-updater and rely exclusively on the Store update system.

VaultSync was created in 2023 by an independent developer identified as ATAC-Helicopter. The project started as a personal tool for managing backups of development projects stored on local drives and NAS. Over time, a graphical interface, cross-platform support, and a snapshot system with detailed change tracking were added. The program is written in C# using .NET and the Avalonia UI framework for the user interface.
