  • Cross-Platform Connection. DbVisualizer establishes simultaneous connections to various database systems from a single interface. The application uses JDBC drivers for communication with servers, enabling operations with MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, DB2, and other databases. Connection configurations are stored in reusable profiles.
  • Integrated SQL Editor. The environment includes an editor for composing and executing SQL statements. This component incorporates syntax highlighting, code autocompletion, query formatting, and multi-tab management. Query results are presented in a grid with sorting and filtering capabilities.
  • Object Browser. A hierarchical structure displays database objects such as tables, views, procedures, and functions. The browser allows navigating schemas, examining object properties, and quickly accessing data via context menus. Structural information is retrieved using system metadata.
  • Data Visualization. SQL query result sets are presented in a tabular format with manipulation tools. The data grid allows in-place editing, export to formats like CSV, Excel, and XML, and calculation of basic statistics. BLOB and CLOB data types have specialized viewers.
  • Visual Query Builder. A graphical component allows creating SELECT statements through drag-and-drop operations. Users select tables, define join conditions, specify WHERE clauses, and configure sorting criteria without manually writing SQL code. The builder generates the corresponding syntax.
  • Administration Tools. Functionalities specific to database administrators include user management, security privileges, session monitoring, and review of server parameters. Some implementations allow running maintenance scripts and analyzing query execution plans.
  • Schema Comparison. A specialized module identifies differences between database structures. The tool analyzes two schemas and generates a report of discrepancies in tables, columns, indexes, and constraints. This function is used in version control processes and change deployment.
  • Command Line Automation. A command-line interface executes SQL scripts and database operations without starting the graphical interface. This mode allows integration with continuous integration systems, task scheduling via cron, and batch processing of query files.
  • Advanced Connection Management. The system manages multiple connections with authentication using various methods such as passwords, Kerberos, and SSL. Configurations include timeout settings, JDBC driver-specific parameters, and network proxy configuration. Sessions maintain independent states.
  • Data Export and Import. Data transfer functionalities between databases and file systems. Export transforms query results into structured formats with control over encoding, delimiters, and transformations. Import loads data from CSV or Excel files into database tables.
  • Stored Procedure Development. A specific editor for creating and modifying stored procedures, functions, and triggers. The environment provides code templates, validation of SQL dialect-specific syntax, and basic debugging capabilities. Compiled objects are tested with sample data.
  • Performance Monitoring. Instruments for analyzing query and connection behavior. The tool displays metrics such as execution time, resource consumption, and server statistics. Execution plans are visualized in graphical format to identify bottlenecks in database operations.
  • Version Control Support. Integration with systems like Git and Subversion for tracking changes in SQL scripts. The system records versions of query files, allows comparisons between revisions, and facilitates commit and update operations from the program interface.
  • Environment Customization. Extensive configuration of the user interface through color schemes, panel layouts, and keyboard shortcuts. Users adjust the behavior of specific components and create configuration profiles for different database work scenarios.

DbVisualizer was initially developed by the Swedish company DbVis Software AB. The first public version was released in 2001. The software is primarily implemented in the Java programming language, which provides cross-platform compatibility. The development team has maintained regular product updates, adding support for new database systems and improving existing functionalities.
