Tabbed interface. The interface organizes work into tabs, allowing multiple queries and tables to be open simultaneously. This design facilitates multitasking without the need to switch between windows.
SQL editor with autocompletion. The built-in editor provides syntax highlighting and autocompletion suggestions for table and column names. This functionality speeds up query writing and reduces typos.
Tabular data viewing and editing. Table contents are displayed in a spreadsheet-like interface. From there, you can navigate, filter, sort, and modify data directly. Complex values, such as JSON objects, can be opened in a sidebar panel for clearer editing.
Connection via SSH and SSL. For secure connections to remote servers, the software allows tunneling the database connection through SSH, supporting SSH agents, key files, and even JumpHosts. It also offers options to encrypt the connection with SSL, being able to validate custom certificates.
Query history and storage. All executed queries are recorded in a history, allowing you to retrieve previous work. Additionally, you can save specific queries and organize them for reuse across different connections.
Visual table creation. It includes a table creator that allows you to define the structure, indexes, and foreign keys with a few clicks, without needing to write the initial DDL SQL code.
Data import and export. It supports creating tables from CSV files. Query results or table contents can be exported to formats like CSV, JSON, JSON Lines, or SQL.
Clickable foreign keys. In the data view of a table, values that are foreign keys are clickable elements. By selecting them, a new tab opens showing the referenced data in the related table.
Quick search. A quick search menu, accessible via a keyboard shortcut, allows you to flexibly search through all tables, views, and saved queries in the connected database, and open them directly.
File association and URL connection. The program can be associated with database files, such as SQLite files, to open them with a double-click from the file system. It also supports custom URL schemes to open pre-configured connections directly from a web browser.

The Beekeeper Studio project was created by Matthew Berg and began its public development in 2019. The application is built with the Electron framework, using web technologies (JavaScript/TypeScript, Vue.js) to create a desktop application. The decision to use Electron allows for a single codebase for all major operating systems.
