Eclipse Hydra is developed as part of the Eclipse project which also includes Eclipse Lun3r (based on Pale Moon). The project emerged as a response to the need to maintain modern browsers for Windows XP after mainstream developers discontinued support for this operating system. The developers are primarily open-source community contributors focused on maintaining the viability of legacy systems. Development began around 2019 as a fork of Basilisk, built on the Unified XUL Platform (UXP). The code is written primarily in C++, JavaScript, and XUL, maintaining the traditional architecture of Gecko-based browsers but with specific optimizations for Windows XP.
