  • Installation variants. The software offers two deployment modes: a traditional installer for full integration with the operating system and a standalone portable variant that can be run from external storage devices without the need for installation.
  • Performance optimizations. Implements performance improvements superior to upstream versions, with more efficient processing of system resources and memory management optimized for older hardware.
  • Duplicate tab function. Incorporates the tab duplication functionality inherited from Mypal, allowing for the rapid creation of exact copies of active tabs with their entire browsing history and current state.
  • Experimental e10s support. Includes experimental implementation of Electrolysis (e10s), the multiprocess architecture that separates web content from the user interface for greater stability and performance.
  • SQL storage. Utilizes SQL database technology instead of the traditional DBM system, providing greater compatibility with upstream profiles and better integration with development tools.
  • JPEG XL support. Implements native compatibility with the JPEG XL image format, allowing the viewing of this modern, highly efficient image compression format.
  • Legacy extension support. Maintains compatibility with traditional XUL/XPCOM extensions, providing continuity for applications and add-ons developed for older platforms.
  • Advanced graphic rendering. Incorporates updated rendering engines for modern web content while maintaining compatibility with legacy technologies specific to Windows XP.
  • Improved profile management. Refined user profile system allowing for independent configurations for different uses or users within the same installation.
  • Updated security. Implements contemporary security patches for protection against modern web vulnerabilities while maintaining compatibility with the Windows XP operating system.
  • Optimized resource consumption. Specifically designed to operate efficiently on limited hardware, with conscious management of RAM and CPU processing.
  • Advanced tab browsing. Tab management system with grouping functions, reopening of closed sessions, and restoration of previous windows.

Eclipse Hydra is developed as part of the Eclipse project which also includes Eclipse Lun3r (based on Pale Moon). The project emerged as a response to the need to maintain modern browsers for Windows XP after mainstream developers discontinued support for this operating system. The developers are primarily open-source community contributors focused on maintaining the viability of legacy systems. Development began around 2019 as a fork of Basilisk, built on the Unified XUL Platform (UXP). The code is written primarily in C++, JavaScript, and XUL, maintaining the traditional architecture of Gecko-based browsers but with specific optimizations for Windows XP.
