  • Customizable Workspaces. Workspaces allow you to organize browsing sessions into separate containers. Each Workspace maintains its tabs, history, and cookies independently, creating differentiated work environments for different activities. The implementation works at the complete browser level.
  • Vertical Tabs. The vertical sidebar positions tabs on the left side of the window instead of the top. This layout optimizes vertical space on widescreen displays and makes it easier to visually manage many open tabs simultaneously.
  • Chrome Extension Compatibility. Floorp integrates a system that allows installing extensions from the Chrome Web Store. The browser handles API incompatibilities by substituting certain interfaces or removing specific implementations within the extension.
  • Multiple Profile System. The profile manager creates completely separate instances of the browser with their own bookmarks, extensions, and settings. Profiles launch in independent windows, functioning as distinct installations within the same executable.
  • Built-in Media Downloader. The media download tool automatically detects audio and video content on web pages. It provides an interface to extract and save these files directly from the browser without requiring external extensions.
  • Tab Unloading (Tab Unload). This feature unloads inactive tabs from RAM after a configurable period, keeping them visible in the tab bar. Clicking an unloaded tab reloads its content, freeing up system resources.
  • Integrated MCP Servers. As of version 12.8.0, Floorp includes support for Model Context Protocol servers. They are activated by setting 'floorp.mcp.enabled' to 'true' in the configuration editor, allowing integration with external artificial intelligence services.
  • Modifiable User Interface. The Floorp interface accepts deep modifications via userChrome.css and userContent.css files. These files allow you to redefine visual elements of the browser and rendered web pages.
  • External Browser Launcher. The context menu for tabs and links includes the 'Open in external browser' option. This feature allows sending URLs to other browsing applications installed on the operating system.
  • Channel-based Update System. Floorp distributes versions through different development channels: Stable, Flasco (formerly Test), and Nightly. Users can switch between channels by modifying the 'Participation Policy' in about:hub.
  • Advanced Session Manager. The browser implements a session restoration system that preserves the complete state of all windows, tabs, and browsing data. It works independently of Firefox's session system.
  • Resizable Toolbars. All interface elements – navigation bars, bookmarks, side panels – support size adjustment via dragging. This flexibility allows adapting the workspace to different workflows.
  • WebRender Compatibility. Floorp uses Mozilla's WebRender rendering engine for hardware-accelerated graphics. This implementation improves performance on pages with complex graphical content and CSS animations.
  • Native Notification System. Web notifications use the operating system's APIs instead of the browser's custom implementations. This ensures visual consistency with other applications and operation with the system's notification centers.

Floorp's development began in 2021 as a fork of Firefox's source code. The project maintains a core team of developers in Japan, with contributions from international collaborators via GitHub. The browser is primarily written in C++, Rust, and JavaScript, inheriting the technological foundation of Mozilla's Gecko engine. Regular updates incorporate Firefox security patches while adding exclusive features. The user community reports bugs and proposes new features through GitHub's issue system.
