FineTune

FineTune is a macOS utility that resides in the menu bar. Its main function is to grant individual volume control, audio routing, and a 10-band equalizer for each running application, also including management of output and input devices with automatic prioritization and support for external displays via DDC.

• Per-application volume control. Allows you to adjust the audio output level of each application independently. The controls include a granular slider and a mute button, visible only when the application is actively playing audio.
• Per-application audio routing. Assigns an application to a specific output device, regardless of the system's default device. The application can follow the default device or remain fixed to a specific one.
• 10-band equalizer. Applies audio processing with 20 presets divided into 5 categories. It only affects the output of the selected device, not the input capture.
• External monitor control (DDC). Adjusts the volume of speakers built into monitors with HDMI or DisplayPort connections using DDC commands. Detection is automatic when connecting the monitor and it handles hot-plug disconnections without freezing.
• Device priority and failover switching. Defines a hierarchical order for output devices. When the active device disconnects, the system automatically switches to the next device with the highest priority. The order persists after restarting the application.
• Edit mode and UID copying. Activates an editable view of the device list. Allows you to reorder priority via drag-and-drop or numerical entry. Includes a button to copy the unique identifier (UID) of each device to the clipboard.
• URL schemes for automation. Exposes six actions (set-volumes, step-volume, set-mute, toggle-mute, set-device, reset) that can be invoked via URL. Supports configuring multiple applications in a single call and preconfiguring applications that are not yet playing audio.
• Volume amplification up to 400%. Increases output gain beyond the device's native level. Applicable globally or per application, complementary to standard volume controls.
• Pinned applications. Allows you to pin applications to the main interface even if they are not playing audio. Facilitates pre-configuration of volume or routing before use.
• Input device control. Monitors and adjusts the gain level of microphones or line inputs. Displays virtual devices in the input list, correctly filtering them from output lists.
• Real-time VU meters. Visualizes the active audio signal strength for each application and device. Allows you to visually monitor the instantaneous playback or recording level.
• Device iconography by classification. Assigns distinctive icons based on the type of audio device detected (speaker, headphone, interface, HDMI, etc.). Facilitates visual identification in long lists.
• Tooltips with full name. Displays the full name of the device or application in an pop-up tooltip when hovering the cursor over truncated elements in the interface.
• Filtering of non-functional controls. Automatically suppresses volume sliders on devices that lack software volume control (e.g., professional USB interfaces), showing only the operational functions.

FineTune's development started in 2024 and is written entirely in Swift, using SwiftUI for the interface. It is primarily maintained by Ronit Singh, with contributions from seven other developers. The commit history reflects continuous activity since its inception, with a distribution model based on tagged releases.
