  • Automatic interface detection. The application recognizes network interfaces configured on the system, including Ethernet, Wi-Fi (AirPort), and virtual interfaces. This function initiates the scan from the Mac's current network configuration.
  • Scan range configuration. Allows you to define the interval of IP addresses for analysis, from a specific address to full subnet ranges. Control over scan parameters directs the search towards specific network segments.
  • Local network scanning with ARP. Uses ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) packets to discover devices on the local network. This method identifies hosts within the same subnet accurately and quickly.
  • Public network scanning with Ping. Employs ICMP echo requests (ping) to detect hosts in public or remote IP ranges. This procedure verifies the activity of devices beyond the local router.
  • Detection via SMB and mDNS protocols. Applies probes with service protocols (Samba and Multicast DNS) to discover Windows computers and Apple devices respectively. This technique identifies nodes that may not respond to other probing methods.
  • Device information. Displays the local IP address, MAC address, hostname, and network adapter manufacturer for each discovered host. This data facilitates the inventory of hardware connected to the network.
  • Hostname resolution. Performs the conversion of IP addresses to names via DNS, mDNS (for Apple devices), and NetBIOS (for Windows computers). Name resolution assigns recognizable identifiers to numerical addresses.
  • Name and comments editing. Allows modifying the displayed hostname and adding custom annotations for each device in the list. Customization of records aids in the administration and categorization of hosts.
  • Details panel. Offers an expanded view with complete information of a selected device, while maintaining a compact main window. This presentation organizes technical data without cluttering the main interface.
  • Column customization. Facilitates hiding or showing specific information columns and adjusting their alignment in the results table. View configuration adapts the data presentation to the requirements of the analysis.
  • Search and filter function. Incorporates a search field to locate specific devices within the scan results. Dynamic filtering reduces extensive lists to specific entries.
  • Continuous live scanning. Performs network analysis periodically and automatically, detecting new devices and changes in connection status. Constant monitoring captures the dynamics of connections on the network.
  • Results export. Generates files in CSV format with all the information collected during the network scan. Data export allows its processing in spreadsheets or documentation systems.
  • Custom URL opening. Makes it possible to access the web management interface of a device (router, printer, NAS) from the application via a configurable address. This action initiates a direct connection to administration panels.
  • IPv6 address support. Detects and displays both local IPv6 addresses (link-local) and global IPv6 addresses assigned to devices. The analysis includes the next-generation Internet protocol alongside IPv4.
  • Network interface selection. Allows manual selection of which physical or virtual network interface will be used to perform the scan. This choice determines the source point of the probe packets.

The LanScan application was created by the company iwaxx Sarl. The first version of the application was published on the Mac App Store in 2011. The software is developed using the Objective-C and Swift programming languages, specifically for the macOS operating system.
