Visual file browser. Interface for exploring system directories and folders. Displays thumbnails of images and media files. Includes four predefined views with user-customizable settings. Navigation is done through folder structures or via user-created virtual albums.
Non-destructive editing. Modification of images without altering the original file. Adjustments are saved as metadata in separate sidecar files or within the application's database. Changes are applied during export or real-time display. Allows reverting any adjustment at any time.
Library compatibility. Direct access to photo libraries from Aperture, iPhoto, Photos, and Lightroom. Lyn indexes and displays the contents of these libraries within its interface. Users can view, organize, and edit images without needing to import or duplicate them into a new structure.
Geolocation and maps. Geotagging functionality for photographs. Displays image locations on an integrated map. Allows editing coordinates by dragging and dropping markers on the map. Reads GPS data from EXIF metadata and writes it to files during export.

Online sharing. Direct export to services like Flickr, Dropbox, and SmugMug. Configuration of privacy settings, size, and quality during upload. Authentication with accounts for these services is managed from within the application using OAuth protocols.
Support for RAW and HDR formats. Native interpretation of RAW files from camera manufacturers such as Canon, Nikon, Sony, and others. Display of high dynamic range images in formats like OpenEXR and Radiance HDR. RAW development adjustments are applied during display and are part of the non-destructive editing process.
Shortcuts and gestures. Navigation using Apple Magic Mouse and trackpad gestures. Gestures allow moving between images, zooming in, zooming out, or rotating. Custom assignment of keyboard shortcuts for frequent commands, speeding up the operator's workflow.

Development of Lyn began in 2009. The creator and lead developer of the software is Mirko Viviani. The first public version was released in 2010. The program is written in Objective-C and uses native macOS frameworks such as Cocoa, Core Image, and QuickTime for its operation and performance.
