  • DNS-based filtering. NxFilter uses the DNS protocol to implement web filtering. This method processes only DNS queries, without inspecting all HTTP/HTTPS traffic. It operates at the domain name resolution level, determining whether a domain should be blocked before any additional connection is established.
  • User authentication. The system supports multiple authentication methods including IP and password authentication. It identifies individual users on the network and applies specific policies based on the credentials provided. Authentication is performed before allowing access to Internet resources.
  • Active Directory integration. NxFilter connects to Windows active directories to import users and groups. It synchronizes domain account information and applies filtering policies based on AD group membership. It keeps changes made to the organizational structure updated.
  • Multiple customizable policies. It allows creating different sets of filtering rules for different types of users. Each policy defines allowed and blocked website categories, access schedules, and bandwidth limits. Policies are assigned to individual users or organizational groups.
  • Single Sign-On. Implements unified login for domain users. Automatically detects Windows credentials without requiring additional authentication. Supports integration with 802.1X authentication systems for enterprise Wi-Fi networks.
  • Dual time-based policy. Configures different filtering rules for work hours and leisure time. Defines specific periods where strict or relaxed restrictions apply. Schedules automatic transitions between policies according to the established calendar.
  • Time quota system. Sets browsing time limits per user or group. Controls the total duration of Internet access during defined periods. Logs time consumed and applies blocks when configured limits are exceeded.
  • Remote filtering for mobile devices. Extends filtering policies to devices outside the local network via DNS over HTTPS. Provides filtering agents for Windows and Chromebook. Maintains control over iOS and Android devices on the go.
  • Centralized DNS cache. Stores DNS responses locally to reduce traffic to external servers. Resolves repetitive queries from the internal cache. Decreases name resolution latency and optimizes bandwidth.
  • Detailed reports and logging. Generates browsing activity reports by user and group. Logs access attempts to blocked sites and usage patterns. Exports logs in Syslog format for integration with external monitoring systems.
  • Web category classification. Uses an updated database of website categories. Classifies domains into categories such as social networks, streaming, or malicious content. Allows creating custom categories and specific whitelists/blacklists.
  • Multi-platform architecture. Runs on Windows, Linux, and macOS operating systems without modifications. Uses embedded components that require no additional software. Maintains functional consistency across different deployment environments.

NxFilter began its development in 2012 by Jinhee Lee. The company specializes in content filtering and DNS security solutions. The software is written in Java, allowing it to run on multiple platforms. The developers maintain regular updates with new features and security enhancements. The product's evolution has incorporated advanced features such as DNS over HTTPS and integration with enterprise authentication systems.
