  • HP-42S compatibility. Plus42 is built on Free42, Thomas Okken's HP-42S simulator, and reproduces the functions and behavior of the original calculator, including its menu system, arithmetic operations, and calculation modes. The interface follows the original layout, so existing programs and workflows keep working.
  • Equation support. Lets you enter algebraic equations and expressions directly, using the equation editor and the built-in solver. Equations can be evaluated, solved for an unknown variable, or integrated numerically.
  • Extended functions. Adds new commands beyond the HP-42S, such as string and list handling, additional math functions, and more flexible program control.
  • Extended memory. Offers far more storage than the original HP-42S, so you can keep more programs, variables, and data without hardware limits.
  • Structured programming. Supports labels, conditional branches, loops, and subroutines. Programs can be edited and stepped through in program mode.
  • Extended precision. Performs calculations with higher precision than the physical calculator by using 34-digit decimal floating-point arithmetic.
  • Import and export. Programs and data can be exchanged as raw files, and programs can be copied and pasted as text, which makes it easy to migrate from Free42 or share programs.
  • Skins and layouts. The calculator appearance can be changed with skin files, from a faithful HP-42S look to custom layouts for different screen sizes.
  • Calculation modes. Covers arithmetic, statistics, matrices, and complex numbers, with specialized functions for each area.
  • Cross-platform support. Available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with consistent features and operation across systems.

Plus42 was developed by Thomas Okken as an extension of his Free42 project, which recreates the HP-42S, a calculator highly valued for its programmability. Free42 has been developed since 2004, and Plus42 is a separate, enhanced version that adds features not present in the original calculator, such as the equation editor, solver, and extended commands. It is written in C++ and runs on many platforms. The software is updated regularly to fix bugs and add new features.
