  • Algebraic calculation. Qalculate processes mathematical expressions with variables, constants, and custom functions. It recognizes standard operators and prioritizes operations according to algebraic rules. Expressions can include parentheses, powers, roots, and logical operations.
  • Unit conversion. The tool converts more than 300 physical units, including length, mass, temperature, and speed. Calculations maintain dimensional consistency and allow conversions between metric and imperial systems. Custom units can be defined using formulas.
  • Statistical analysis. Performs linear regression, standard deviation, and probability distributions. Data is entered in lists or matrices, and results include confidence intervals and scatter plots. Supports hypothesis testing and analysis of variance.
  • Symbolic calculation. Manipulates algebraic expressions without evaluating them numerically. Factors polynomials, expands terms, and solves equations symbolically. Differentiates and integrates functions analytically when possible.
  • Matrix operations. Calculates determinants, inverses, and eigenvalues of matrices. Multiplies, adds, and subtracts matrices with dimension checking. Supports diagonalization and LU decomposition.
  • Graphing. Plots 2D functions with adjustable scales and axes. Displays multiple curves on a single graph with custom legends. Exports images in PNG or SVG formats.
  • Physical constants. Includes more than 100 fundamental constants, such as the speed of light or the electron charge. Values are updated according to recent scientific measurements. Constants can be used directly in equations.
  • Calculation history. Stores all operations performed during the session. Lets you review, edit, and reuse previous entries. The history is saved between sessions in text format.
  • Customizable notation. Adjusts the output format for complex numbers, fractions, or scientific notation. Sets decimal precision and rounding as needed. Supports different conventions for decimal separators.
  • Scripting and automation. Runs command sequences in its own language or through Python integration. Scripts can include conditionals, loops, and recursive functions. Results are exported to CSV or LaTeX files.

Qalculate was originally developed by Hanna Knutsson in 2002. The project uses the GTK libraries for its graphical interface and is written in C++. The first stable version was released in 2003, with regular updates that added advanced features. The code is currently maintained on GitHub with contributions from multiple developers.
