  • Visual connection to databases. Establishes connections through a graphical interface that manages servers, ports, users, and databases. Connection parameters are stored as favorites for quick access. Supports SSH and SSL connections for secure communication.
  • Schema navigation and exploration. Displays a hierarchical list of all databases, schemas, tables, views, indexes, and sequences on the connected server. Browser-style navigation allows quick access to any schema object.
  • Tabular data viewing and editing. Presents the contents of tables and views in a spreadsheet-like grid. Allows direct data editing in cells, with support for BLOB, JSON, and geometric data types. Changes are committed row by row.
  • Result filtering and sorting. Applies dynamic filters to result sets using a simplified syntax. Sorts results by clicking on column headers. Filters can be combined to perform complex searches.
  • Table structure editing. Modifies the definition of existing tables: add, rename, or delete columns, change data types, set default values, and define constraints. Operations are translated into corresponding SQL DDL commands.
  • Graphical query builder. Creates SELECT queries through an interface that allows selecting tables, joining fields, and defining WHERE conditions without writing SQL code. The tool generates the SQL statement automatically.
  • SQL editor with syntax highlighting. Includes a text editor for writing and executing arbitrary SQL commands. Offers syntax highlighting for PostgreSQL keywords, functions, and data types. Supports the execution of multiple statements.
  • Primary and foreign key management. Defines and modifies primary key constraints on tables. Visualizes and creates foreign key relationships between tables. The interface displays referential dependencies graphically.
  • Data import and export. Imports data from CSV or TSV formats into existing tables. Exports query results or table contents to CSV, JSON, or SQL files. Configures encoding and delimiter options.
  • Query and result history. Maintains a historical record of all SQL queries executed during a session. Temporarily stores result sets to allow for later re-querying or export.
  • Materialized view handling. Supports the creation, updating, and deletion of materialized views. Offers specific commands to refresh the data of a materialized view with CONCURRENTLY options.
  • Execution plan inspection. Analyzes query performance through execution plan explanations. Displays the plan in graphical or text format, with details on estimated times and algorithms used.

Postico development began in 2014 by Jakob Egger. The application is created specifically for macOS using Objective-C and Swift languages. The graphical interface components employ native Cocoa frameworks. The first public version was released in 2015.
