  • Synchronous Modeling. A modeling technology that merges direct modeling with controlled dimensions and parameters. It provides flexibility in modifying 3D models without the constraints of a strict sequential history, enabling rapid changes to imported or complex designs.
  • Ordered Modeling. A parametric modeling environment based on a feature history. It offers precise control over design evolution, where each feature is built sequentially upon previous ones and can be edited through its sketch and defined parameters.
  • Assembly Design. A set of tools for creating and managing complex product structures composed of multiple components. It supports motion and mating constraints, top-down and bottom-up design strategies, and allows working with large assemblies containing thousands of parts.
  • Sheet Metal Design. A specialized environment for creating parts manufactured from sheet metal. It includes commands for flanges, louvers, tabs, and face recognition, and automatically generates the flat pattern of the component for manufacturing, considering factors like the bend allowance.
  • Surface Modeling. Capabilities for creating and editing complex and organic surface geometries. These surfaces can be combined with solids in a hybrid model, used in the design of car bodies, aerodynamic components, or stylized enclosures.
  • Stress and Motion Analysis. Integrated simulation functions for verifying the physical behavior of designs. It allows for static finite element analysis to evaluate stresses and deformations, and kinematic/dynamic analysis to study motion and forces in mechanisms.
  • Frame Design. A module for modeling frame structures using standard profiles (pipes, beams, angles). It automates tasks such as cuts, notches, corners, and the generation of bills of materials for manufacturing.
  • Pipe and Cable Routing. Functionalities for designing piping systems, conduits, and wiring harnesses within an assembly. It utilizes standard component libraries and allows for defining paths, generating length reports, and creating installation documentation.
  • Convergent Modeling. Technology that enables working with polygonal meshes (such as those from 3D scans or 3D printing) alongside traditional CAD surface and solid geometry. It facilitates operations like reverse engineering or preparing models for additive manufacturing.
  • Design Data Management. Built-in management functions allowing for version control, status management, and team collaboration. Solid Edge Insight offers data management based on Windows, while Solid Edge Manage provides advanced PDM capabilities.
  • Drafting. A drawing environment for producing two-dimensional technical documentation from 3D models. It associatively generates views, sections, details, annotations, and tables, updating automatically with changes made to the model.
  • Model-Based Definition (MBD). The ability to annotate the 3D model directly with manufacturing information (PMI), such as dimensions, geometric tolerances, and notes. This information can be used in manufacturing and inspection processes, reducing reliance on 2D drawings.
  • Generative Design. Tools that employ algorithms to create optimal geometries based on defined design goals, spatial constraints, and load conditions. This approach produces organic and material-efficient forms that would be difficult to conceive manually.
  • CNC Programming. The Solid Edge CAM Pro module allows for creating toolpaths for numerically controlled machines. It includes 2.5 and 3-axis milling operations, turning, adaptive machining strategies, and material removal simulation to verify the process.

Solid Edge was initially developed by Intergraph Corporation, which released the first version in 1996 as a native 3D CAD application for Microsoft Windows. The project was started by a team of engineers at Intergraph to offer an alternative in the mid-range CAD market. In 1998, Intergraph's mechanical CAD product line, including Solid Edge, was acquired by UGS Corp. (later Siemens PLM Software, now Siemens Digital Industries Software). A major technical milestone was the introduction of Synchronous Technology in the ST version of 2008.
