  • 2D Drafting and Annotation. A comprehensive set of commands for creating precise geometry, layers, hatches, and dimensions. Includes references to blocks and external files (Xrefs), management of text styles and tables, facilitating the production of detailed technical drawings and two-dimensional project documentation.
  • Direct 3D Modeling. Modeling technology based on the direct manipulation of geometry without a parametric history. It allows pushing, pulling, dragging, and splitting solid faces, offering an agile and flexible way to conceive and modify complex three-dimensional designs.
  • Assemblies (Mechanical Design). A specific module for product and machinery design. It allows creating assembled sets from multiple parts, managing positional relationships, inserting standard components from libraries, checking interferences between parts, and generating bill of materials and exploded views.
  • BIM (Building Information Modeling). An integrated environment for architectural and civil engineering design. It generates an intelligent model with construction elements like walls, slabs, doors, and windows that contain data. It facilitates the automatic and coordinated extraction of floor plans, sections, elevations, and material quantities.
  • AI-Assisted Drafting. Tools powered by machine learning that automate repetitive tasks. The AI pattern recognizer suggests commands and completes drawing sequences. AI Blockify converts repetitive geometry into dynamic blocks, optimizing file size and performance.
  • Sheet Metal. Functionalities for designing folded and developed parts. It allows creating parts from scratch or converting solid 3D models into sheet metal, applying bends, calculating the automatic flat pattern, and adding specific features such as ribs and louvers.
  • Rendering and Visualization. An integrated rendering engine that uses global illumination and physically accurate materials to generate photorealistic images and walk-through animations from 3D models. It is used for creating high-quality presentations and design reviews.
  • Documentation Tools. A system for generating manufacturing and construction drawings from 3D models. Automatic creation of projected views, sections, details, and annotated quantity tables, maintaining a bidirectional link with the model for instant updates upon changes.
  • Support for LISP, .NET, and C++. Full compatibility with programming languages and automation APIs. Users can run existing LISP applications, develop custom plugins with .NET (C#, VB.NET) or C++, and directly access the drawing database to create tailored tools.
  • Data Management and Collaboration. Functions for version control and teamwork. It includes tools for comparing drawings, highlighting visual differences, and support for working with file references on a network. Cloud collaboration is enhanced with optional Bricsys 24/7 integration.
  • Mesh to Solid Conversion. Ability to transform polygonal mesh geometry (from 3D scanners or STL files) into native, editable CAD solid models. This process allows for reverse engineering and modification of existing models that lacked parametric data.
  • Parametrization and 3D Constraints. A system for adding defined intelligence and relationships to 3D geometry. It allows applying variable dimensions (parameters) and geometric constraints (parallelism, concentricity, etc.) between solid faces and edges, controlling their behavior and enabling systematic design variations.

BricsCAD was initially developed by the Belgian company Bricsys NV, founded in 2002 by Erik De Keyser. The first commercial release of BricsCAD occurred in that same year, 2002, positioning itself as a .dwg-compatible alternative to other CAD solutions on the market. The core of the program is primarily written in the C and C++ programming languages, which provides performance and direct control over system resources. Throughout its history, Bricsys has focused its development on integrating technologies such as direct modeling and artificial intelligence, acquiring and merging technologies like those from the Russian company LEDAS for geometric constraints.
