  • Virtual environment creation. Vagrant lets you define and configure virtual machines using providers such as VirtualBox, VMware, Hyper-V or Docker. Environments are specified in a Vagrantfile, which guarantees an identical configuration on different machines.
  • Multiple provider support. The tool supports various hypervisors and virtualization platforms. This makes it possible to run environments on different technologies without modifying the base configuration.
  • Automated provisioning. Includes built-in provisioners for installing software via Shell scripts, Chef, Puppet, Ansible or Salt. Provisioning runs automatically during virtual machine creation.
  • Cross-platform portability. Vagrant environments can be shared between developers regardless of the host operating system. This standardizes the working environment for distributed teams.
  • File synchronization. Provides mechanisms for synchronizing folders between the host system and the virtual machine. Changes are reflected automatically in both environments.
  • Configurable networking. Lets you define private networks or set up port forwarding to access services running inside the virtual machine from the host system.
  • Unified CLI. Offers a consistent command-line interface for managing the full virtual machine lifecycle: creation, startup, shutdown and destruction.
  • Configuration tool integration. Works with configuration management systems such as Ansible, enabling complex infrastructure orchestration as code.
  • Preconfigured templates. Supports boxes, which are preconfigured base images that speed up the creation of new development environments.
  • Multi-machine setups. Supports defining multiple virtual machines in a single Vagrantfile, making it possible to simulate distributed infrastructures with a single command.
  • Extensible plugins. Functionality can be extended through a plugin system that adds support for new providers or additional features.

Vagrant was created by Mitchell Hashimoto, who began its development in 2010. The project is maintained by HashiCorp, a company specializing in infrastructure tools. It is written primarily in Ruby. The first public version was released in March 2010, and the first stable release, Vagrant 1.0, followed in March 2012. HashiCorp continues active development of the project, adding new features and maintaining compatibility with the latest virtualization technologies.
