Browser Tamer is a proxy application for Windows that redirects links. It operates locally to intercept URL opening requests from any program on the system. These requests are directed to a specific browser or profile based on user-configurable rules. The process is completely local, requiring no external connections, account registration, or data collection. The tool automatically identifies available browsers and profiles on the system.

• Rules by domain. This function allows defining the destination browser or profile based on the domain of the URL being activated. You can configure links from 'example.com' to always open in Firefox, while those from 'internal.example.net' open in a dedicated Chrome profile for work. The rules are evaluated in a specific order set by the user.
• Rules by protocol or file extension. The function applies criteria based on the URL scheme or file type. It is possible to redirect all URLs using 'ftp://' to a specific FTP client, or files with the '.pdf' extension to a default document viewer, separating this traffic from regular web browsing.
• Automatic detection of browsers and profiles. Browser Tamer scans the system to generate a list of all installed web browsers. It also detects and lists all user profiles created in browsers like Firefox, Chrome, and Edge. This list is presented in the interface for direct selection when creating rules.
• Manual browser chooser. When a link is activated that doesn't match any configured rule, this function displays a popup dialog. The dialog presents a list of detected browsers and profiles, allowing the user to manually choose where to open the link. This choice can be saved as a new automatic rule.
• Window management mode. This function controls the state of the destination browser window when opening a new link. The user can configure the browser to start minimized, maximized, or with specific focus. They can also define that the link open in a new tab of an already existing window instead of creating a new instance.
• Custom scripting. For complex redirection criteria, this function allows executing a custom script. The script receives the details of the activated URL as parameters and returns a decision regarding the browser or action to take. This enables logic that depends on the time of day, the URL's content, or the state of other programs.
• System default browser. A browser or profile can be configured as a default option. This setting applies to any link that does not meet the conditions of other, more specific rules and when the manual chooser is not active, ensuring every URL has a defined destination.
• Activity log. The tool maintains a historical log of all redirections it performs. For each event, the original URL, the selected destination browser or profile, the rule applied, and a timestamp are stored. This log serves to audit system behavior and debug rule configurations.
• System tray icon interface. Browser Tamer runs as a background process represented by an icon in the Windows system tray. This icon provides quick access to the configuration menu, the activity log, and options to pause or resume the proxy service.
• Configuration import and export. This function allows saving the complete set of rules, browser settings, and preferences to a file. This file can be imported into another Browser Tamer installation or used as a backup. It facilitates replicating configurations on multiple machines or recovery after a reinstallation.

Browser Tamer is developed by Ivan G (aloneguid). Its active development has been visible in the public repository since June 2023. The application is primarily written in C++, constituting approximately 97% of the codebase. The project uses CMake for build management.
