• Split-pane editing. The main interface consists of two adjacent panels: the left pane for writing Markdown text and the right pane displaying the rendered HTML output. Both panels update simultaneously as the user types.
• Interface themes. Inkwell incorporates four color schemes for the editing area: Editorial (light background with high contrast), Midnight (dark background), Mono (grayscale), and Sepia (warm tone). Themes apply exclusively to the editor and do not affect the rendered content.
• Focus mode. The Focus Mode feature dims all interface elements except the current paragraph or line where the cursor is positioned. This mode can be toggled via a control located in the status bar.

• Version history. The tool maintains a local history of previous file versions. Users can navigate through saved revisions and restore any prior state of the document.
• Image pasting. When copying an image from the clipboard—for instance, from a web browser or screenshot—Inkwell allows direct pasting into the editor. The program saves the image file in the document directory and automatically generates the corresponding Markdown syntax.
• Built-in templates. The editor includes ten predefined templates for common document types: note, article, task list, source code, technical documentation, among others. Templates are inserted as Markdown text in a new tab.
• GitHub Flavored Markdown support. The rendering engine implements all GFM extensions: tables, strikethrough, task lists, fenced code blocks with language identifiers, automatic mentions, and emoji.
• Syntax highlighting. The editing panel colors syntax for over 30 programming languages when using delimited code blocks. Highlighting is based on Tree Sitter and updates in real time.
• PDF and HTML export. Export functionality, available in the Pro version, generates PDF documents with consistent typography and layout. HTML export produces a standalone file containing the rendered content and applied styles.
• Offline operation and no telemetry. The application makes no network requests at any time. User data remains exclusively on their local machine, and the program collects no usage statistics nor sends error reports.

Development of Inkwell Markdown Editor began in 2023. The program is written in the Rust programming language and utilizes the Tauri v2 framework for interface construction. The project was initiated by the developer known as 4worlds4w-svg, who maintains the GitHub repository. The Tauri-based architecture results in a compact executable (approximately 11 MB) and lower memory consumption compared to Electron-based applications.
