Fenestrae is software for Windows 11 that solves two common problems in multi-monitor setups: windows scattering whenever the display configuration changes, and the tedious manual alignment of windows. The application captures the complete desktop state (position, size, and application of each window) into named profiles, bound to the specific monitor topology using a system fingerprint. Additionally, it includes an arrange mode activated by Ctrl+Win+A that displays a full-screen transparent overlay, enabling window snapping to each other, to monitor edges, center lines, and a configurable grid, with visual distance indicators and alignment guides.

• Window profiles bound to monitor topology. Fenestrae saves the complete window layout (position, size, and application) into a named profile. Each profile is linked to a unique fingerprint of the current monitor setup, so when reconnecting a monitor, waking from sleep, or logging in, the program automatically restores the correct layout for that specific display configuration.
• Arrange Mode. Pressing Ctrl+Win+A activates an interactive full-screen overlay that turns any area of the desktop into a snapping canvas. While active, windows snap to the edges of other windows, to monitor edges, to center lines, and to a configurable grid, allowing rapid and structured repositioning.
• Configurable column grid with quick switching. The arrange mode includes a column-based grid whose number of divisions can be adjusted on the fly. Scrolling the mouse wheel cycles through preset values (12, 8, 6, 4, or 3 columns), instantly adapting the alignment guide to the needs of the workflow.
• Blue alignment guides and gap indicators. During dragging in arrange mode, visual blue guides appear showing when a window is aligned with another, with the monitor center, or with the grid. Additionally, measurements of the gaps between windows are displayed; these measurements turn green when the spacing between two windows is exactly equal, facilitating symmetrical layouts.
• Ghost preview while dragging. When dragging a window with arrange mode active, a semi-transparent silhouette of the window is shown at its current position, allowing precise evaluation of the location before releasing the mouse button. This reduces uncertainty and subsequent readjustments.
• Axis lock and free drag. Holding the Shift key during arrange mode restricts window movement to the horizontal or vertical axis, enabling precise rectilinear displacements. If the Control key is held, snapping is temporarily disabled, allowing completely free movement without adhesion to guides or edges.
• Automatic profile association on startup, wake, and display changes. Fenestrae can automatically restore the last used profile when logging into Windows, when resuming the computer from sleep, or when detecting a change in monitor configuration (connecting or disconnecting displays), without manual intervention.
• Manual capture of named profiles. The user can save a snapshot of the current desktop state at any time, assigning it a custom name. These profiles are stored and linked to the monitor topology active at the moment of capture, and can be restored manually whenever required.
• Background execution with no persistent UI. The application resides in the system tray without additional windows or taskbar icons. It displays no permanent user interface, activating only through defined keyboard shortcuts or via the tray icon's context menu.
• Snap to window and monitor edges. In addition to the grid, arrange mode allows direct snapping of windows to the edges of other windows, to the edges of each monitor, and to the center lines (both horizontal and vertical) of each screen, replicating and extending the native Windows behavior.
• Visual indicators of equal spacing. When two or more windows are aligned and the distance between them is identical, the gap indicators change their color to green, providing immediate visual confirmation that the spaces are equalized.

Development of Fenestrae began in 2023 as a solution focused exclusively on Windows 11, created by the developer known as mawwedge, author of other Windows productivity tools such as Mawwedge DirectShow Filters and the FileView file explorer add-on. The application is written entirely in C++ using the Qt framework, ensuring low resource consumption and direct integration with the operating system's window management APIs.
