  • Fuzzy search across entire table. Locates rows even when the searched text contains typos or partial matches. The function evaluates string similarity and displays results sorted by relevance, facilitating data deduplication or retrieval of records with misspelled names.
  • Instant formula calculation in cells. Supports basic arithmetic operations, statistical functions (SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT), and relative cell references. The engine evaluates expressions in real-time as the user edits data, without requiring a confirmation key.
  • Import and export of standard formats. Reads and writes CSV files (with any delimiter), Excel (.xlsx), and OpenDocument (.ods). During export, formulas are preserved either as calculated values or as textual expressions, based on selected configuration.
  • Frozen rows and columns view. Allows fixing a specified number of top rows and left columns to keep headers visible while navigating the rest of the table. This feature operates independently of zoom level and persists when saving the file.
  • Column value filtering. Applies quick filters based on text, numbers, or dates. The filter can be exact, range-based, or using regular expressions, temporarily hiding non-matching rows without modifying underlying data.
  • Batch data transformation. Executes operations on selected ranges: convert text to uppercase/lowercase, trim excess spaces, extract substrings, or apply uniform numeric formatting. Changes apply immediately and are reversible via undo.
  • Table merging via primary key. Performs VLOOKUP operations between two loaded files. User selects the key column in both tables and decides which additional columns to incorporate from the secondary table.
  • Multi-level sorting with custom criteria. Sorts data by one or multiple columns, defining ascending or descending order independently for each level. The algorithm correctly handles numeric values, ISO dates, and accented characters.
  • Change history with unlimited undo/redo. Every modification to cells, rows, or columns is recorded in an action stack. User can revert or reapply any change, even after saving the file, as long as the session remains open.
  • Real-time data validation. Defines validation rules per column (numeric ranges, text length, unique values) and displays a visual warning if input violates the rule. Validation does not block editing, only informs the operator.
  • Export to HTML and PDF with basic formatting. Generates a table view in HTML format or a PDF document with dimensions matching the spreadsheet. For PDF output, margins and page orientation can be adjusted before generation.
  • Search and replace with regular expressions. Locates text using RegEx patterns and replaces it with another value throughout the entire file or within a selection. The function reports number of replacements made and allows change preview.
  • Column data type management. Explicitly assigns a type (text, number, date, currency) to each column to enforce correct interpretation during import and prevent unwanted automatic conversions. Assigned types are stored in program metadata.
  • Descriptive statistics view. Automatically calculates minimum, maximum, mean, median, and standard deviation for selected numeric columns. Results display in a side panel and can be copied to clipboard.
  • File splitting by column content. Divides a large table into multiple separate files based on unique values of a specified column. Each resulting file retains original headers and saves in user-selected format.

Development of NextCell began in 2022 by Redata.dev, a company specializing in data processing tools for professional environments. The first stable version was released in January 2023, written entirely in Rust and utilizing a graphical interface based on the Tauri framework, ensuring a compact executable with no external dependencies. The core team consists of engineers with prior experience in columnar database optimization and in-memory query engines.
