  • Cross-platform support. Allows connection using original clients from various versions of AIM, ICQ, Yahoo! Messenger, and other protocols. Each version retains its technical and interface peculiarities.
  • Protocol reimplementation. The team has reconstructed the OSCAR (AIM/ICQ) and TOC (Yahoo!) protocols through reverse engineering, thoroughly documenting every technical aspect.
  • Historical features. Restores features such as "Talk" voice chat in pre-6.0 AIM, direct file transfer, bitmap buddy icons, and mood messages in ICQ.
  • Modern WebAPI. Offers a REST API interface for developers, allowing integration of classic messaging functionalities into custom applications or bots.
  • Support for mobile clients. Provides functional versions of AIM for Android and iOS devices, maintaining compatibility with modern operating systems.
  • Unified authentication system. Users can manage multiple accounts through a centralized system that supports the various implemented protocols.
  • Encrypted communication. Implements SSL/TLS for secure connections, especially for clients that originally did not include encryption in their native protocols.
  • Cross-device synchronization. Maintains consistency in contact lists, statuses, and messages across different clients connected to the same account.
  • Developer tools. Publishes detailed technical documentation on the implemented protocols, including originally undocumented aspects.
  • Patching system. Offers utilities to modify original clients and redirect their connections to NINA's servers while maintaining maximum compatibility.

The NINA project started in 2020 as a community initiative to preserve messaging services at risk of disappearing. Developed mainly in Python and C++, the system operates on a distributed server infrastructure. The team maintains a focus on historical accuracy, seeking to replicate not only the functionality but also the peculiarities of each supported client version.
