  • Multiple service integration. Franz supports simultaneous connection to over 50 messaging and collaboration services. This includes popular platforms like WhatsApp, Slack, Facebook Messenger, Telegram, Skype, Microsoft Teams, Discord, and Google Hangouts. Each service operates in an independent tab within the unified environment.
  • Multiple accounts per service. It is possible to add several accounts for the same service. For example, you can connect two Slack accounts for different work teams or one personal and one professional WhatsApp account. Each instance is managed as a distinct tab with its own credentials and specific settings.
  • Organized tab interface. The main interface uses a tab system similar to a web browser. Tabs display service icons and unread message counters. Users can rearrange tabs by dragging, close them, or quickly open new service instances.
  • Centralized notification system. All alerts from connected services are managed through Franz. It displays numerical badges on tabs with pending messages. Operating system notifications can be customized per service, activating or deactivating sounds and pop-up alerts individually.
  • Cross-device synchronization. Use a Franz account to synchronize settings across different computers. The list of added services, their order, and some preferences are stored in the cloud. This allows you to restore the complete configuration when installing the application on a new computer.
  • Focused work mode. Includes a "Work Mode" that temporarily silences notifications from all services. During this period, notifications accumulate but do not interrupt. Upon deactivating the mode, all accumulated alerts are shown at once.
  • Visual theme customization. Offers a variety of color themes for the interface, including dark and light themes. Users can adjust the overall appearance of the application to reduce eye strain or to match their personal work environment.
  • Optional distraction blocking. Features a blocking system that can hide certain tabs during defined periods. This blocking helps minimize interruptions from non-essential services while performing tasks that require concentration.
  • Inactivity reminders. Detects periods of user absence and marks messages received during that time. Upon returning, it shows a summary of missed activity, making it easier to identify conversations requiring priority attention.
  • Configurable keyboard shortcuts. Assign specific key combinations for common actions. You can navigate between tabs, activate work mode, search conversations, or show/hide the application using customizable shortcuts.
  • Connection status indicators. Displays the connectivity status of each service via icons on the tabs. Identifies internet connection problems, specific service outages, or expired credentials requiring a new login.
  • Limited unified search. Allows searching for terms within the currently active service. The search is executed within the context of the selected tab, browsing results within that particular messaging application.
  • Support for business services. Includes compatibility with corporate communication tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, Mattermost, and Rocket.Chat. It handles organization-specific authentications and integrations with enterprise directories.
  • System resource management. Monitors and optimizes the memory and CPU usage of active service instances. Includes options to automatically free resources from inactive tabs, reducing the impact on system performance.
  • Automatic service updates. Keeps the web components of each service updated automatically. This ensures compatibility with the latest functionalities of messaging platforms and transparently corrects security issues.

Franz was created in 2016 by Stefan Malzner. Development began as a personal project to solve the fragmentation of messaging applications on the desktop. The first stable version was released in February 2017. The application is built primarily with JavaScript, using the Electron framework which allows creating cross-platform desktop applications with web technologies. Electron combines Chromium and Node.js, enabling the use of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for developing the interface and application logic.
