  • Customizable interface. Users can design control panels by dragging and configuring widgets such as faders, buttons, selectors, and graphs. Each element can be adjusted in size, color, and behavior to suit the needs of the project.
  • OSC support. The tool communicates via the OSC (Open Sound Control) protocol, allowing it to send and receive data with software such as Pure Data, Max/MSP, or Reaper. OSC messages can be mapped directly to widgets.
  • MIDI integration. Open Stage Control detects MIDI devices and lets you assign physical controls to widgets. It also sends and receives MIDI CC, Note, and SysEx messages.
  • Network connectivity. Panels can be controlled from any device with a web browser, since the application works as a local server. Multiple clients can connect at the same time.
  • JavaScript scripting. Widgets can be programmed with JavaScript to add custom logic, real-time calculations, or advanced interaction between controls.
  • Presets and snapshots. Lets you save and load control configurations, which is useful for quickly switching between settings during live performances.
  • DAW communication. Integrates with digital audio workstations such as Ableton Live or Bitwig Studio through scripts or plugins that translate OSC/MIDI into native controls.
  • Layout import/export. Panel layouts are saved as JSON files, which makes them easy to edit, share, or reuse in other projects.
  • Client synchronization. Changes made on one device are reflected instantly on all other connected devices, which is ideal for real-time collaboration.
  • Interactive widgets. Includes elements such as XY pads, audio visualizers, virtual joysticks, and editable text fields for building complex interfaces.
  • Activity log. Displays a detailed history of incoming and outgoing OSC/MIDI messages, which is useful for debugging configurations.
  • Automatic IP detection. Automatically detects the server's IP address to simplify connecting clients on the same network.

Open Stage Control was developed by Jean-Emmanuel Doucet (also known as AMMD) and first released in 2016. The project is written in JavaScript using Node.js and Electron, which allows it to run on Windows, macOS, and Linux. The application emerged as a solution for controlling sound equipment in live shows, combining design flexibility with support for standard music production protocols.
