The development of Pro Tools began in 1984 by engineers Evan Brooks and Peter Gotcher, founders of Digidesign. The platform adopted the name Pro Tools in 1991 with the release of the dedicated TURBO hardware. Avid Technology acquired Digidesign in 1995. The program's codebase contains components written in the C and C++ languages, with specific modules for digital signal processing in assembly language.
