  • Non-destructive editing. Operations such as cutting, copying, and modifying audio regions do not alter the original source files. This method maintains the integrity of the recorded material and allows for reverting changes at any stage of the project. Editing is performed on a visual timeline where regions can be moved, lengthened, or shortened without affecting the underlying content.
  • Mixing with automation. The system records and plays back fader movements, panning, and plugin adjustments in automatic mode. Automation can be written in real-time during playback or drawn manually on the tracks. Multiple modes like Read, Write, Touch, and Latch are managed, allowing dynamic control over the evolution of the mix.
  • Real-time audio processing. Effects and processes are applied using AAX plugins during session playback, without the need for prior offline processing. This includes equalizers, compressors, reverbs, and restoration tools. The HDX audio engine allows loading complex plugin chains with minimal latency.
  • Multitrack recording. Capability to capture audio signals from multiple simultaneous sources, limited by the connected interface hardware. Each recording track monitors input with latency compensation and can be armed individually. The system manages input channel assignment, disk buffer, and file format for the takes.
  • Composite session. Sessions support combining audio tracks, virtual instruments, auxiliary busses, and master faders within a single project file. Tracks are organized in a vertical list and displayed horizontally in the edit window. The project maintains references to external media files and saves the state of all processing.
  • Compatibility with exchange standards. Import and export of file formats such as Broadcast Wave, AIFF, MP3, and OMF/AAF sessions. This functionality facilitates project transfer between different post-production systems and studios. Translations include edit information, crossfades, and basic automation levels.
  • Synchronization tools. Audio conforming based on tempo and meter changes using algorithms like Elastic Audio. Audio regions can be adjusted to the rhythmic grid without affecting their original pitch. The system also synchronizes playback with external devices via MTC, MMC, and LTC protocols.
  • Low-latency monitoring. The signal path from the analog-to-digital converter input to the operator's monitors introduces a delay measurable in milliseconds. The software and driver architecture reduces this delay to imperceptible values, enabling real-time instrument recording. The audio buffer is configured according to the computer system's capabilities.
  • Dedicated surface control. Integration with physical consoles like the Avid S-series and controllers like the Artist Series. Hardware elements map mixing, editing, and transport functions, providing a tactile interface. Communication is established via the EuCon protocol over an Ethernet connection.
  • Collaborative workflow. Sharing complete projects or specific tracks through the Avid Cloud Collaboration platform. Users with permissions can access a remote session, download elements, and upload modifications. The system manages versions and detects conflicts when multiple operators edit the same element.
  • Video compliance. Loading video files in formats like QuickTime and Avid DNxHD for sound post-production. The image plays back in a floating window synchronized with the audio timeline. Synchronization markers are inserted, and final mixes are exported with the audio embedded in the video container.
  • Sound and loop library. Browsing and inserting pre-recorded samples from the Workspace window. Files can be auditioned before import and adjusted to the session tempo. The library contains percussion instruments, rhythmic patterns, and sound effects categorized by genre and type.

The development of Pro Tools began in 1984 by engineers Evan Brooks and Peter Gotcher, founders of Digidesign. The first commercial version, Sound Designer, was released in 1989 as an editing system for the Emulator II digital sampler. The platform adopted the name Pro Tools in 1991 with the release of the dedicated TURBO hardware. Avid Technology acquired Digidesign in 1995. The program's codebase contains components written in the C and C++ languages, with specific modules for digital signal processing in assembly language.
