Pipit

Pipit — Free Download. Local voice transcription for macOS
The Pipit app converts speech to text in real time using AI models that run completely on the device. It does not require a permanent internet connection, and audio data never leaves the user's computer. The software is activated via a global keyboard shortcut, transcribes spoken speech, and places the resulting text directly into the active application.

  • Real-time transcription. The recognition engine continuously processes audio from the microphone input while activated. It displays the text being transcribed in a minimal screen overlay. Latency between speech and text appearance is low.
  • Local processing. All artificial intelligence models for speech-to-text conversion run on the Mac's memory and CPU. The operation does not depend on external servers. This architecture guarantees the privacy of voice data and allows the software to be used without an internet connection.
  • Hotkey activation. The user configures a modifier key, such as Option. Holding it down activates listening mode. Releasing the key ends the transcription process and inserts the text at the cursor position.
  • Unified history. A central log stores both transcribed text from dictation sessions and the system clipboard history. This log is searchable. It allows retrieving previously dictated or copied text fragments.
  • File transcription. The functionality supports importing audio and video files in common formats. The software extracts the audio track and generates a complete text transcription. File processing is done locally on the device.
  • Adaptive dictionary. The system incorporates a learning mechanism for custom vocabulary. It adds words, names, acronyms, and specific technical terminology. Future transcriptions use these entries to improve accuracy in specialized contexts.
  • Automatic correction. The engine applies standard grammar and spelling rules to the transcribed text. It transforms spoken punctuation into written punctuation marks. It produces text ready for use with basic formatting applied.
  • Raw transcription mode. An optional setting disables automatic corrections and formatting. It provides a literal text output of what was recognized by the voice model. It is suitable for capturing code, technical identifiers, or notes without modification.
  • Open Router integration. The software supports using API keys from external services like Open Router. This configuration redirects audio processing to larger, externally hosted AI models, with costs associated with the provider.
  • Minimal overlay interface. During activation, a small, translucent display shows the status and provisional text. This interface does not interrupt the workflow. It does not open separate application windows or require switching context from the app in use.
  • Voice profile manager. It allows creating and selecting different configurations for the language model. Each profile can contain independent dictionary settings, formatting preferences, and substitution rules. They are switched based on the work context.
  • System resource monitoring. The software includes indicators of CPU and memory usage by the AI models. It provides data on transcription speed in words per minute. It helps evaluate performance on specific hardware.

Development of Pipit began in 2022. The creators are independent software developers with experience in native macOS applications and local machine learning technologies. The application is written primarily in the Swift programming language, using the Cocoa and AppKit frameworks for the user interface. The core speech recognition components employ neural network models optimized for Apple Silicon architecture. The first public version was released in late 2023.
