Unified Messaging. Trillian's primary function is consolidating contacts and conversations from different messaging services into a single interface. It supports protocols such as XMPP, OSCAR for AIM and ICQ, and Yahoo Messenger. It allows managing multiple accounts simultaneously without needing to run separate clients.
Continuous Synchronization. The client's architecture keeps the state of conversations synchronized across all of a user's devices. Messages sent from a phone appear immediately in the active desktop session. Chat history is available on all access points.
Smart Notifications. The alert system detects user activity on different devices. It suppresses push notifications on the mobile phone when the user is active on the desktop version. It avoids duplication of audible and visual alerts.
Secure Communication. All data transmissions between the client and Trillian's servers use TLS encryption. This security layer protects message content from interception by third parties on the network. Account authentication is also carried out through encrypted channels.
File Transfer. The application includes the ability to send and receive files directly between contacts. It supports transfer via peer-to-peer connections when possible, or through server relay. It shows the transfer progress and allows download management.

Trillian's development began in the year 2000 by the American company Cerulean Studios. The founding team included Scott Werndorfer and John Hering. The technical implementation used the C++ programming language for the core and user interface. Subsequently, it expanded to other platforms such as macOS, Android, iOS, and web versions. The architecture incorporated its own transit servers to handle synchronization between devices and provide relay services for obsolete protocols.
