  • Citation management with reference managers. Zettlr integrates directly with reference managers including Zotero, JabRef, and Mendeley. Citations are inserted through an interactive selector that queries the external database. Hovering over a citation generates a tooltip with the corresponding bibliography entry, enabling verification of references during the writing process.
  • Export functionality using Pandoc and LaTeX. The application employs Pandoc as the conversion engine for exporting documents to formats including PDF, DOCX, ODT, HTML, and LaTeX. Custom templates for Word and LaTeX are supported, allowing output adaptation to academic journal requirements or institutional standards without modifying source text.
  • Zettelkasten method for knowledge organization. Specific features for the Zettelkasten method include bidirectional links between notes, unique identifiers, and the ability to create interconnected knowledge networks. This structure supports organization of complex ideas and long-term information retrieval.
  • Full-text search with advanced filters. The search engine indexes all content within open files and enables filtering by file type, directory, tags, and modification dates. Results display with highlighted matches and can be navigated without leaving the main interface.
  • Editor with syntax highlighting and code snippets. The editor provides syntax highlighting for over one hundred programming languages, including support for code blocks with specialized notation such as MathTeX and Verilog. A snippet system automates insertion of predefined text blocks, including document templates and repetitive structures.
  • Visual workspace and folder organization. Multiple workspaces can be managed with manual sorting through drag-and-drop operations. Folders support accent colors (blue, purple, rose, red, orange, yellow, green) to improve visual identification within the file manager, complementing existing customizable icons.
  • Tag system with Unicode support. The tagging system accepts extended Unicode characters, including emojis, expanding semantic classification possibilities. Tags are indexed and can serve as criteria in searches and content organization.
  • Writing assistance tools. Integrated spell checker supports multiple languages with real-time word count and a focus mode that highlights only the paragraph or block being edited. The autocorrect system enables undoing changes without disrupting text structure.
  • Interface customization through CSS and themes. The interface includes native light and dark themes, along with support for custom CSS stylesheets featuring autocompletion. This flexibility permits appearance adjustments according to individual preferences or visual accessibility requirements.
  • File preview and footnote display. A Quicklook system provides file previews without requiring documents to be fully opened. Footnotes appear in popup windows with formatted content, maintaining text legibility during reference consultation.
  • Project management with export profiles. Projects group related documents and allow definition of custom export profiles. Each profile can configure format-specific options, templates, and conversion parameters, facilitating document production for different publication targets from the same source files.
  • Resilient operation in volatile environments. The startup sequence handles missing files, inaccessible directories, and permission errors without interrupting execution. This characteristic ensures stability in environments synchronized with cloud services or systems with changing configurations.

Development of Zettlr began in 2017 under the initiative of Hendrik Erz, who also serves as the primary maintainer. The project was conceived as an open-source tool to address document management requirements in academic contexts, combining Markdown simplicity with capabilities typical of technical publishing systems. Development is built on the Electron framework, utilizing JavaScript, TypeScript, and Node.js for desktop application construction. The multilingual architecture includes active translations maintained by contributors in German, French, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and other languages.
