  • Free-form idea spaces. Curio offers infinite, customizable canvases where users can place, drag, and organize any type of content spatially. These spaces simulate a physical desktop, allowing for non-linear organization adaptable to the visual flow of thought.
  • Integrated collections. Includes specialized collection figures such as lists, tables, mind maps, index cards, albums, bulletin boards, and Kanban-style stacks. These collections serve to structure information within the free-form space, offering specific formats for different data types and work methodologies.
  • Extensive metadata system. Every item in Curio can be annotated with metadata like tags, start and due dates, completion percentage, priority, rating, and assigned resources. This system allows for filtering, advanced searching, and systematic tracking of all project components.
  • Synchronization with external files. The Professional version allows for bidirectional or unidirectional synchronization of text figures and collections (lists, mind maps, tables, stacks) with external files (.md, .csv, .tsv, .opml, .taskpaper). Changes are detected and applied instantly, integrating work with file-based systems like Obsidian or folders in iCloud.
  • Compositions. This is a superior type of collection that can contain and organize other collections and figures (text, images, lists) within a single layout. "Tabloid" type compositions offer flexible row and column layouts, and "Matrix" compositions provide structured grids with editable cells, allowing for the creation of complex, nested information structures.
  • PDF import and annotation. PDF documents can be imported and spread across one or multiple idea spaces. Over this spread, users can add annotations, sticky notes, highlights, and figures directly onto the PDF content, integrating document review into the project workflow.
  • Multimedia and web content integration. Image, audio, video files, office documents, and live web views can be embedded directly into the idea spaces. This includes displaying content from YouTube, online maps, and interactive web pages, centralizing all research and resources in a single context.
  • Shelves and cross-project organization. A system of side shelves (like the Status Shelf, Stencils Shelf, or Search Shelf) providing quick-access panels and visibility across multiple projects. They allow for task management, template use, and global searches without leaving the current work context.
  • Customizable cross-references. Ability to create custom links and references between figures, specific idea spaces, and web locations within a project or between different projects. This establishes a connected information network that reflects relationships between concepts.
  • Journal and temporal planning. Journal function designed for capturing chronological notes, ideal for daily meetings, classes, or activity logging. It combines with the date and calendar system for planning and temporal tracking of project tasks and milestones.
  • Reusable templates and stencils. A stencil library and template system that allows saving and reusing common figure designs, space arrangements, and collection formats. It accelerates the setup of new projects while maintaining visual and structural consistency.
  • Presentation and review modes. Curio includes presentation modes that hide the editing interface and show only the project's content, useful for team reviews or idea pitches. Content can be exported to formats like PDF, plain text, rich text, or Markdown for distribution.

Curio was created and is developed by Zengobi, a software company founded by George Browning. Development of Curio began in the early 2000s, with its first public version released in 2004. The program is written primarily in Objective-C and Cocoa, using macOS's native frameworks, ensuring deep integration with the operating system.
