Encryptability

Encryptability — Free Download. Virtual encrypted disks with AES encryption
Encryptability is a software encryption utility for Windows 11 and10 that creates Virtual Encrypted Disks to store sensitive information. The program employs the AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm to protect files and folders, generating two keys: a Data Encryption Key for read and write operations, and an Authentication Key derived from the user password that protects the former. Virtual disks reside on internal drives, external drives, or network folders. When the host drive is disconnected or the computer powers down, data remains locked until the correct password is entered, at which point the encrypted area mounts as a drive with an assigned letter for use.

  • AES encryption standard. Encryptability implements the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) algorithm, recognized as an industry standard for data protection. This mechanism secures Virtual Encrypted Disks so that accessing the data without the correct password is not feasible, as no current technology exists capable of breaking this layer of encryption.
  • Compatibility with any drive type. The software functions with internal hard drives, solid-state drives (SSD), USB flash drives, memory cards, portable hard drives, and network drives. Any device recognized by the Windows operating system can serve as a location to host a Virtual Encrypted Disk.
  • Support for heterogeneous file systems. Encryptability operates with drives formatted as NTFS, exFAT, or FAT32 automatically. Virtual Encrypted Disks formatted as NTFS can be created on FAT32 drives and vice versa, without requiring the user to know the underlying file system.
  • Support for large capacity drives. The application manages drive sizes from 1 megabyte up to 128 terabytes, the maximum limit supported by Windows. Performance during use of large-capacity drives remains consistent without noticeable degradation after the initial encryption process.
  • Recovery key creation. During the configuration of a Virtual Encrypted Disk, Encryptability offers the option to generate a spare key. This key, stored separately, permits access to encrypted data when the primary password has been misplaced or forgotten.
  • Operation across multiple Windows versions. The tool supports Windows editions from Windows 7 through Windows 11, covering 32-bit, 64-bit, and ARM 64-bit architectures. Support includes the latest service packs and cumulative updates for each version.
  • Integrated wizard for encrypted drive creation. A step-by-step wizard guides the creation of new Virtual Encrypted Disks. The process includes assigning a name, selecting the host folder, optionally hiding the disk, changing the folder icon, adjusting the size, selecting the file system, and splitting the host file into segments of predefined size.
  • Encryption of free space on existing drives. The utility allows encryption of unused space within the target drive. This operation executes as part of the virtual disk creation process, though it requires extended processing time depending on the selected capacity.
  • Automatic data locking. When the computer shuts down, the host drive disconnects, or the user manually stops the Virtual Encrypted Disk, Encryptability removes the Data Encryption Key from RAM and locks access to the encrypted content. The locked state persists until the valid password is entered again.
  • Operation with network drives and corporate environments. Encryptability permits hosting Virtual Encrypted Disks on shared network folders. For enterprise environments, the Administrator Kit provides installation files in EXE and MSI formats, Group Policy templates for automated license distribution, and the ability to restrict specific program commands.
  • Visual status indicator via tray icon. When a drive containing a virtual encrypted disk connects to the system, Encryptability places an icon in the notification area of the taskbar. A color change of this icon visually signals whether the encrypted disk is in an unlocked and accessible state after successful authentication.
  • Support for segmented file systems. The host file containing the Virtual Encrypted Disk can be split into multiple segments of configurable size. This feature facilitates transferring or copying the encrypted disk across systems that impose individual file size limitations.

The development history of Encryptability traces back to the early years of WinAbility Software, a company established with the purpose of creating security tools for Windows. The application was originally conceived to provide virtual-disk-based encryption without requiring physical repartitioning of drives, a characteristic that distinguished it from other existing solutions. Core development of the application began in the mid-2000s, with the first stable version released for Windows XP and Windows Vista, subsequently evolving to support 64-bit architectures and changes in the driver model of later Windows versions. The programming language used for Encryptability is C++ combined with the Windows Driver Kit (WDK) framework for implementing the encryption filter that operates at the kernel mode level on the file system.
