USBCrypt is an encryption utility for Windows that secures sensitive information using the AES algorithm. It blocks unauthorized access to USB flash drives, portable hard drives, and fixed disks. • Automatic locking upon drive disconnection. When the storage device is removed, the computer is powered off, or the virtual disk is manually stopped, the data remains locked. The encryption key is erased from RAM to prevent subsequent unauthorized access.
• Recovery key generation. During initial configuration, USBCrypt allows the creation of an independent recovery key. This feature provides access to encrypted data in case the main password is lost or forgotten without requiring external recovery procedures.
• Operation without network infrastructure dependency. Drives encrypted with USBCrypt can be used on other Windows computers without having the program installed. The access mechanism depends solely on knowledge of the password.
• Compatibility with Windows versions. USBCrypt supports 32-bit and 64-bit systems, including ARM64 architecture, from Windows 7 through Windows 11, encompassing the latest editions with their respective service packs and security updates.
• Enterprise environment version. An Administrator's Kit is available, containing installation files in EXE and MSI formats. This kit provides a Group Policy template for distributing license keys and restricting software commands across multiple computers without internet validation.
• Real-time encryption with filter driver. Files are encrypted on the fly through a filter driver. When an application saves data to the virtual disk, the content passes through the encryption engine before being physically written to the host drive, ensuring continuous protection during read and write operations.
• Dual encryption key system. USBCrypt generates a Data Encryption Key to protect files and an Authentication Key derived from the user password that encrypts the Data Encryption Key. This mechanism separates authentication from the primary decryption process.

The first version of USBCrypt was developed by WinAbility Software, a company focused on security and privacy utilities for Windows. Development began in 2008 with the goal of providing an encryption solution for removable drives that did not depend on external components or internet connectivity. The software is written in C and C++, utilizing Windows filter drivers for integration with the file system.
