Precise pixel art. Dedicated tools for per-pixel editing without anti-aliasing. Includes single-pixel pencil, straight line, square, and circle tools with grid snapping. A visible grid and isolated preview mode can be activated. Limited color palettes and indexed color mode simulation are supported.
Raster painting with soft brushes. Brush engine with support for opacity, flow, and basic shapes. Includes soft round brush, texture brush, airbrush, and calligraphy pen. Strokes support pressure-sensitive tablets. Spacing, angle, and tip roundness can be adjusted.
Vector graphics on the same canvas. Tools for creating Bezier paths, vector geometric shapes, and freehand curves. Vector objects maintain resolution independently of zoom and can be scaled without loss. Editing of control nodes, anchor points, and curves with handles is provided.
Frame-by-frame animation. Timeline with layers per frame. Each frame can have its own duration and can be looped. Onion skin tools display previous and subsequent frames. Export as GIF, image sequence, or MP4 with H.264 codec.
Node graph for non-destructive editing. Each effect, mask, color adjustment, or transformation is represented as a connectable node. The user can chain blur, levels, curves, gradient map, brightness/contrast, threshold, and other nodes. Changes apply in real time without altering original drawing data. Custom shaders can be created using GLSL code nodes.
Multiple layer workflow. Layer system with blending modes (multiply, screen, overlay, soft light, color, luminosity, among others). Each layer can have its own opacity, transparency lock, and layer mask. Layers can be grouped, merged, duplicated, and reordered via drag-and-drop.
Selection and mask tools. Rectangular, elliptical, polygonal lasso, and magic wand selections by color range. Selections can be saved in alpha channels and modified using boolean operations (union, intersection, difference). Transformations can be applied only within the selected area.
Free transform and warp. Transform tool with visual controls for scaling, rotating, skewing, and perspective distortion. Includes grid-based warp with draggable control points. All transformations work on both pixels and vector objects.
Procedural generation and patterns. Noise filters (Perlin, simplex, value), tileable pattern generation, grids, dots, and stripes. Radial, linear, and conical gradients with multiple color stops can be created. Procedural textures can be designed using the node graph.
File formats and advanced export. Saving in native .pixi format that preserves the node graph and vector layers. Export to PNG with alpha channel, JPG with adjustable quality, SVG for vectors, animated GIF, MP4, and image sequence. Import of layers from PSD (Photoshop) and SVG files is also supported.
Color palettes and color management. Color picker with HSV wheel, RGB sliders, and hexadecimal input. Support for sRGB color profiles. Custom palettes can be saved in .gpl (GIMP) or .aco (Adobe) formats. The color sampling tool (eyedropper) captures exact pixel or vector object values.
Multi-level undo history. Complete log of up to 200 actions per document. History shows each operation with its thumbnail. Any previous drawing state can be restored. Actions include brush strokes, transformations, layer changes, and vector node editing.
Rich text tools. Text layer with support for TrueType and OpenType fonts. Text remains editable as a vector object until rasterized. Kerning, line spacing, horizontal/vertical alignment, and solid or gradient color can be adjusted.
Real-time symmetry and tiling. Symmetry modes including radial, axial (vertical/horizontal), and multi-point. With symmetry enabled, strokes replicate automatically across all axes. A tiling mode also exists to create repeating patterns while painting.
Image scaling and resampling. Scaling algorithms specific for pixel art (integer scaling without smoothing, hqx, xBRZ) and for photography (bicubic, Lanczos, nearest neighbor). Canvas size or active layer size can be resized independently.

Development history of PixiEditor began in the year 2021. The program is written in the C# programming language using the .NET framework and the Avalonia UI platform for cross-platform interfaces. The main developers are independent programmers under the project name "PixiTeam". Initially the editor only supported basic pixel art, but through successive updates raster painting, vector, nodes, and animation were added. The stable version 1.0 was released in 2023.
