Filmulator

Filmulator — Free Download. RAW photo film simulation processor
Filmulator is a raw photo editing application with library management that simulates the film development process as if the digital sensor had exposed the same light as a photographic negative. Large bright regions become darker, compressing the output dynamic range. Small bright regions make their surroundings darker, enhancing local contrast. In bright regions saturation is enhanced, helping retain color in skies, skin tones and sunsets. In extremely saturated regions the brightness is attenuated, helping retain detail in subjects such as flowers or textured surfaces.

  • Dynamic range compression via large bright regions. When an image contains overexposed or very bright large areas, Filmulator darkens them in a controlled manner. This function reduces the difference between the lightest and darkest zones, allowing the final photograph to show detail in both shadows and highlights without requiring manual exposure bracketing. The algorithm identifies extensive high-luminance regions and applies tonal correction similar to fine-grain overexposed negatives.
  • Local contrast increase through peripheral darkening. Small bright areas cause their surrounding pixels to become darker, enhancing edges and textures. This function improves perceived sharpness and depth without adding masking artifacts or halos. The result is an image with elevated microcontrast that reveals hair strands, textile fibers, plant leaves or geological details without altering the global exposure structure.
  • Selective highlight saturation recovery. In clear skies, bright skin tones or sunsets, the saturation channel is boosted to avoid the washed-out appearance typical of overexposed raw files. This function maintains vibrant color even when luminosity is high, emulating the behavior of high-contrast slide films. The saturation parameter acts exclusively on pixels with luminance above 70 percent.
  • Brightness attenuation in extremely saturated regions. Intensely colored flowers, neon lights or synthetic fabrics tend to lose detail due to sensor saturation. Filmulator identifies these areas and reduces their luminosity without altering hue or chromatic purity. The result preserves surface texture and color patterns, avoiding uniform blotches or channel clipping in individual color channels.
  • Film area control. This function modifies the equivalent emulsion size being simulated, from small values that accentuate brightness in large regions to large values that slightly flatten the dynamic range but emphasize fine details. The default value corresponds to a 36x24 mm negative. Reducing the film area enhances global contrasts; increasing it improves microtexture definition without losing tonal control.
  • Drama adjustment (film effect intensity). Drama determines the strength of the film simulation application. Higher values reduce the output dynamic range, shifting the post-filmulator histogram toward the left. With the default film area, values up to 100 are usable without excessive information loss. With large format equivalent areas, the optimal value stays below 50 to avoid an excessively flat appearance.
  • Highlight recovery. A parametric function that reconstructs information lost in overexposed channels. Value 0 disables correction. Value 3 corrects moderate clipping in non-skin areas. Value 9 is optimized for skin tones with clipping and demands higher processing quality, requiring more computation time. Intermediate values (4 through 8) perform weighted blends between modes 3 and 9. Values 1 and 2 produce no visible effect.
  • In-pipeline mini histograms. The interface displays two miniature histograms located before and after the filmulation algorithm. The first histogram is used to adjust exposure compensation and highlight recovery before processing. The second histogram shows output clipping, allowing black and white level adjustments after applying the film simulation.
  • User interface scale for high-density displays. In the Settings tab, a User Interface Scale slider allows enlarging or reducing graphical interface elements. After changing the value, the user must save the setting and restart the program. This function enables full HiDPI support even when the system does not automatically detect pixel density.
  • Edit queue management (enqueue). From the Organize tab, photographs can be selected and added to a processing queue via double-click. To remove an image from the queue, the secondary button and the Remove from queue option are used. Queued images retain their ratings from zero to five stars, and the Filmulate tab allows loading them sequentially with a double-click to apply development adjustments.
  • Timezone correction for capture-date sorting. The Camera UTC Offset and Local UTC Offset parameters adjust the time difference between the camera clock and the geographic zone where the photograph was taken. This function ensures that the directory structure based on capture date (Destination Directory and Backup Directory) remains accurate, even when traveling across time zones or when the camera clock was not automatically synchronized.
  • Shadow and highlight rolloff points. Shadow rolloff point and Highlight rolloff point define how smoothly the tonal curve transitions toward extreme zones. Modifying these parameters achieves a more progressive response in deep shadows or in highlights near clipping, imitating the shoulder and toe of the characteristic curve typical of analog emulsions.
  • Independent shadow and highlight brightness. Shadow brightness and Highlight brightness allow raising or darkening dark and light regions separately without affecting the tonal midpoint. This function complements global exposure compensation and avoids halos or contrast reversal common in simple lighting algorithms.
  • Black and white tipping points. Black tipping point and White tipping point define the threshold beyond which pixels become pure black or pure white. Reducing these values increases apparent contrast but may clip subtle information at the histogram extremes. The function operates independently from the dynamic range compression performed by the film simulator.
  • Independent vibrance and saturation. The Vibrance parameter increases saturation of the least saturated colors selectively, protecting skin tones and avoiding an artificial appearance. The Saturation parameter affects all pixels equally. Combining both allows adjusting overall chromatic intensity without oversaturating critical elements such as faces or flowers.
  • One-click reset of all adjustments. Each tool includes a button or action to return all parameters to their default state. This function allows experimentation without risking loss of the original photograph settings, speeding up tests of different simulated development styles.

Development history: Filmulator was originally created by CarVac (a user on photography forums) and later maintained by a small team of contributors. Development began around the year 2016 as a personal project to emulate the stand development process applied to digital raw files. The application is written primarily in C++ using the Qt framework for the graphical interface and libraries such as LibRaw for raw file decoding, along with OpenMP for parallel computation optimization. The main developers have maintained the program under a community contribution model, adding library management functions, edit queue and advanced tonal controls without departing from film simulation as the core processing algorithm.
