Vectorworks

Vectorworks — Free Download. Computer-Aided design for Architecture and Design
Vectorworks is a computer-aided design (CAD) software program developed by Nemetschek North America. It is used for technical drawing, drafting, and three-dimensional modeling. The software provides capabilities in 2D, 3D, production management, and presentation for all phases of the design process. Vectorworks is aimed at architects, landscape designers, lighting designers, and event planners. The program integrates BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodologies and is known for its rendering engine.

  • Integrated 2D/3D drawing and modeling. Vectorworks provides a unified environment for creating geometry in both two and three dimensions. Drawing tools for plans, elevations, and sections connect directly to the three-dimensional models. This workflow eliminates the need to maintain separate files for different views of the same project.
  • Building Information Modeling (BIM). BIM functionality allows the creation of intelligent models with data associated with objects. Each building element contains information about materials, costs, thermal properties, and manufacturer data. This information is extracted to generate plans, material takeoffs, and energy performance analyses.
  • Rendering with Renderworks. The rendering engine, based on CINEMA 4D technology, generates photorealistic and stylized visualizations. It includes real-time rendering modes, global illumination, and an extensive library of materials and textures. The results are used for client presentations and studies of natural and artificial lighting.
  • Site design and landscaping. Specific tools for terrain design, including creating topographic surfaces from survey data, modifying contour lines, and calculating earthworks. Plant libraries with growth data and botanical characteristics are included for horticultural documentation.
  • Lighting and scenic design. Dedicated modules for lighting design for shows, theaters, and events. They allow positioning of real luminaires from manufacturers, calculating lighting levels, creating circuiting plans, and visualizing light effects within the three-dimensional scenic space.
  • Documentation and annotation. An automated system for generating construction drawings, sections, elevations, and details. Dimensions, tags, and drawing sheets update dynamically when the model is modified. Graphic consistency is maintained across all project documents.
  • Interoperability and compatibility. Native support for importing and exporting standard industry file formats. Includes compatibility with DWG, DXF, DWF, IFC, SKP, 3DS, PDF, and OBJ. Interoperability with IFC facilitates the exchange of BIM models with other professionals using different software.
  • Scripting and customization. An integrated programming language (VectorScript) and support for Python allow automating repetitive tasks and creating custom tools. Users can develop scripts for specialized calculations, generate complex geometry, or connect Vectorworks with external databases.
  • Energy and solar analysis. Analysis modules that evaluate the energy performance of buildings and solar exposure conditions. They perform simulations to calculate thermal loads, study solar incidence throughout the year, and optimize designs to comply with efficiency regulations.
  • Presentation and publishing management. A set of tools for creating interactive presentations, digital portfolios, and web publications. It allows exporting model views to high-resolution images, creating virtual tours, and publishing models in 3D format for viewing in web browsers.
  • Networked collaborative work. Functions that allow multiple users to work on the same project in a coordinated manner. The external reference system manages links to files from other disciplines. Version control and change logging facilitate collaboration in large work teams.
  • Object and resource libraries. Extensive collections of parametric objects and predefined symbols for furniture, equipment, vegetation, luminaires, and building elements. The libraries include products from real manufacturers, with up-to-date geometry and technical data.

Vectorworks was initially developed by the company Diehl Graphsoft, founded by Richard Diehl. The program was released in 1985 under the name MiniCAD. The original code was written in the Pascal programming language. The company was acquired by the Nemetschek Group in the year 2000, becoming Nemetschek Vectorworks, Inc. Modern versions of the software are developed in C++. The program has evolved from a basic 2D drawing application for Macintosh to a cross-platform (macOS and Windows) CAD/BIM platform used worldwide.
