  • Global volume control. Background Music incorporates a main volume control that adjusts the sound level of the entire operating system. This control works independently of existing hardware and software controls on the system.
  • Per-application volume regulation. The application allows you to individually modify the volume of each program that produces sound. Each active application appears in a list with its own volume slider.
  • Automatic player pausing. When audio activity is detected from an application other than the configured music player, Background Music automatically pauses music playback. This function is activated by applications like web browsers or video players.
  • Automatic music resumption. After audio playback from other applications ends, Background Music resumes playback of the previously paused music player. The system detects the cessation of external audio activity.
  • Virtual audio device. Background Music creates a virtual audio device that sits between applications and the actual audio hardware. This virtual device processes and mixes audio signals before sending them to the physical output device.
  • Menu bar interface. The application provides an icon in the macOS menu bar that allows quick access to the main controls. From this panel, you can adjust the global volume and access the per-application volume settings window.
  • Per-application balance adjustment. In addition to volume control, Background Music allows you to adjust the left-right stereo balance for each individual application. This setting only affects the selected application without altering the system's global balance.
  • AppleScript integration. The application includes AppleScript support that allows automating tasks related to audio control. Scripts can adjust volumes, pause playback, or modify specific settings via commands.
  • Protection against device changes. Background Music maintains its volume settings when the user switches between audio devices such as USB headphones or external speakers. Set volume levels are preserved when connecting or disconnecting audio peripherals.
  • Real-time monitoring. The system continuously monitors the audio activity of all applications running on macOS. This monitoring allows it to immediately detect when an application starts or stops playing sound.
  • Input permission management. The application requests and manages the necessary permissions to access macOS system audio functions. This management includes authorizations to monitor and control other applications' audio according to the operating system's security requirements.
  • Low-latency audio processing. Background Music implements audio signal processing with minimal latency to avoid perceptible delays in playback. Processing is optimized to maintain synchronization between different audio sources.

Background Music was created by Kyle Neideck as an open-source project. Development began in 2016 and continues actively with contributions from multiple developers. The application is primarily written in C++ and Objective-C, using macOS audio frameworks such as Core Audio and Audio HAL. Recent versions maintain compatibility with macOS Big Sur, Monterey, Ventura, and later versions.
