  • Connection to serial ports. CoolTerm automatically detects available serial ports on the system. It allows establishing connections with devices using custom baud rate, data bits, parity, and stop bits settings.
  • Sending data. Includes a text field for entering commands manually. Supports sending ASCII characters, hexadecimal, and control codes. Data can be transmitted immediately or with programmed delays.
  • Receiving data. Displays received data in a real-time text window. Allows configuring the display format, including options to show non-printable characters in hexadecimal.
  • Session logging. Saves communication history to text or binary files. Logs can include timestamps and specific events for easier post-analysis.
  • Macros and automation. Allows creating predefined command sequences to automate repetitive tasks. Macros can be triggered by hotkeys or specific events.
  • Terminal configuration. Offers options to emulate VT100 and ANSI terminals. Includes settings to control cursor behavior, text colors, and scrollback.
  • Signal monitoring. Displays the status of serial port control lines such as RTS, CTS, DTR, and DSR. Allows manually toggling these signals for hardware testing.
  • Search tools. Includes functions to search for text within the received buffer. Supports regular expressions and pattern-based filtering.
  • Data export. Allows copying sections of received text to the clipboard or exporting them to formats like CSV for processing in other applications.
  • Hexadecimal mode. Displays input and output data in hexadecimal format alongside their ASCII representation. Useful for debugging binary protocols.
  • Python scripting. Integrates a Python interpreter to extend functionality via custom scripts. Allows direct interaction with the serial port through an API.
  • Data comparison. Offers tools to compare received frames with predefined patterns. Generates alerts when matches or discrepancies are detected.

CoolTerm was developed by Roger Meier as freeware software. The first public version was released in 2010. The program is written in C++ using the Qt framework to ensure cross-platform compatibility. Meier maintains periodic updates with bug fixes and functionality improvements. Development focuses on stability and compatibility with serial communication standards.
