  • Tabbed notes with single file architecture. The application operates on a single container file that holds multiple independent notes. Each note appears as a tab in the interface, eliminating the need to open multiple files simultaneously. This approach centralizes all information in one location, simplifying data organization and access.
  • Tree-type hierarchical notes. Beyond simple tabbed notes, the program supports notes structured as trees. Within a single note, multiple levels of nested pages can be established, facilitating the creation of outlines, documents with chapters, or any structure requiring hierarchical organization.
  • Rich text editor (RichEdit). The editing component is built on the standard Windows RichEdit control, offering text formatting with various fonts, colors, styles, and paragraphs. Images in formats such as GIF, PNG, JPG, and BMP can be inserted and managed, with options to embed them in the file or store them externally, including an internal image viewer.
  • Secure note encryption. Each notebook file can be protected with encryption, restricting access to users who provide the correct password. This function ensures confidentiality for sensitive information stored within the application, such as personal records or private data, without affecting other program features.
  • Advanced search across all notes. The search function extends beyond the active note; the "Search All" option performs a complete scan across all notes, including tree nodes and subfolders. Results display text snippets with highlighted matches, enabling rapid and precise location of information throughout the entire file.
  • Virtual nodes for dynamic organization. Virtual nodes can be created to function as dynamic views or groupings of existing notes without duplicating content. This feature allows information organization under different criteria simultaneously, maintaining a single data source with multiple structured access methods.
  • Per-file configuration settings. Each KeyNote NF file can store its own behavior settings, keyboard shortcuts, and preferences. This enables different files to operate independently, adapting to the specific requirements of each project or workspace without interference between files.
  • Macros and task automation. The system includes a macro engine that records and plays sequences of actions within the editor. Macros can be assigned to key combinations or buttons, automating repetitive tasks such as template insertion, text formatting, or custom transformations on content.
  • Template system for notes. Predefined templates can be configured to determine the initial structure, formatting, and content of new notes. When a note is created from a template, the defined configuration applies automatically, streamlining the creation of recurring elements such as journals, project logs, or standardized forms.
  • WordWeb integration and external tools. The application offers native integration with the WordWeb dictionary, allowing quick reference lookups and synonym searches from within the workspace. External tools can also be configured and invoked from the menu or via shortcuts, extending program capabilities without leaving the main interface.
  • Multiple backup systems. An advanced backup system maintains version histories of notebook files. Backups can be configured with specific time intervals, number of versions to retain, and custom locations, reducing the risk of data loss from failures or unintended modifications.
  • Advanced text style management. The editor allows preconfigured styles (such as headings, quotations, or code blocks) to be defined and applied, unifying formatting across the document. Styles can be modified globally, automatically updating all instances where they have been used, facilitating consistent presentation in extensive documents.

The application was originally created by Marek Jedlinski as KeyNote 1.0, with development beginning around the year 2000. The project was later extended by Daniel Pradov under the name KeyNote NF (New Features), maintaining the original codebase written in Borland Delphi.
