DeepSkyStacker

DeepSkyStacker — Free Download. Astro Image Stacking
DeepSkyStacker is an application designed to process and stack astronomical photographs. Its main purpose is to combine multiple exposures of deep-sky objects to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and reduce the impact of thermal noise and sensor defects. The program is used by astrophotographers to obtain more detailed images of galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters.

  • Automatic image registration. DeepSkyStacker automatically aligns photos based on the stars detected in each frame. It compares star positions and adjusts rotation and shift to ensure precise overlap. This is essential for correctly stacking shots with different orientations or slight field variations.
  • Dark frame calibration. The program subtracts dark frames from light images to remove thermal noise and hot pixels. It combines multiple dark frames into a master dark that captures the camera's noise pattern. This process significantly improves the quality of the final image.
  • Flat frame correction. DeepSkyStacker applies flat frames to compensate for uneven illumination and dust spots on the sensor or optical system. It normalizes field illumination and corrects vignetting, ensuring a uniform sensor response across the whole image.
  • Bias and dark flat frames. In addition to darks and flats, the program supports bias (offset) frames and dark flats. This allows for more accurate calibration and better removal of the sensor's read noise.
  • Frame selection by quality. The software scores each individual image based on the FWHM (full width at half maximum) of the stars, the number of detected stars, and the background level. It lets you filter out shots with poor focus, imperfect tracking, or passing clouds, so only the best frames are used for stacking.
  • Advanced stacking methods. Includes algorithms such as average, median, maximum, and kappa-sigma clipping. Each method has specific advantages: averaging reduces random noise, median rejects outliers such as cosmic rays, and kappa-sigma statistically rejects deviating values.
  • Color image processing. Supports RAW files from DSLR cameras and color images from astronomy cameras, including the debayering of one-shot color sensors. Stacking preserves color balance and avoids alignment artifacts between color channels.
  • Basic post-processing tools. Offers curve, level, and color balance adjustments to optimize the resulting image. These controls let you bring out details without additional software in the early stages of processing.
  • Multiple format support. Works with standard formats such as FITS, TIFF, PNG, and JPG, as well as RAW files from major camera manufacturers. Reads EXIF metadata and FITS headers to obtain exposure parameters and camera settings.
  • Drizzle mode. Supports drizzle (including Bayer drizzle) to recover resolution when stacking undersampled images, producing sharper stars and finer details.
  • Comet stacking. A dedicated mode for comets that aligns images on the comet nucleus, on the stars, or on both, so that both the comet and the star field can be kept sharp.
  • Batch processing. Lets you process large sets of images without manual intervention. Configure all the parameters once and apply the same workflow to multiple datasets, which is ideal for large projects or recurring processing. A command-line version is also available.

DeepSkyStacker was created by Luc Coiffier. The program is written in C++ and uses specialized libraries for processing astronomical images. Over the years, it has incorporated contributions from the astrophotography community and remains a reference tool in its category. Its continued development has added support for new cameras, improved algorithms, and optimized workflows.
