DISMTools

DISMTools — Free Download. Windows Image Management GUI
DISMTools is a graphical user interface (GUI) for DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management) that makes it easier to manage Windows images (WIM files). Built for users who need to handle system images, perform maintenance, or prepare deployments without memorizing complex commands, it presents all the operations available in DISM through visual windows and menus. This makes mounting, modifying, and cleaning up Windows images accessible to technicians and administrators.

  • Custom image capture. Makes it easy to capture an entire drive or partition to create a custom WIM file. Supports maximum, fast, or no compression, and lets you split the resulting file into several volumes for easier storage or distribution on removable media.
  • Applying images to disks. Writes a WIM image directly to a target partition, preserving security attributes and timestamps. Includes options to verify data integrity after applying the image and to exclude specific files during the process.
  • Package and feature management. Adds or removes .cab or .msu packages in images without fully mounting the system. Also lets you enable or disable optional Windows features (such as .NET Framework or Hyper-V) by specifying the source of the required files, which is useful for preparing images for mass deployments.
  • Driver management. Injects .inf drivers into offline images, checking the digital signature and compatibility with the target architecture. Lets you list drivers that are already integrated, remove them if necessary, and export lists for documentation. Supports drivers for both Windows PE and full versions of the system.
  • WIM file conversion and splitting. Converts images between WIM (Windows Imaging Format) and ESD (Electronic Software Download) formats while preserving data integrity. Also lets you split large WIM files into smaller parts (SWM) for burning to DVD or distributing over networks with size limits.
  • Cleanup and space recovery. Analyzes mounted images or WIM files to identify superseded components and leftover files. Runs cleanup of previous component versions (reset base) and reduces the final image size by removing obsolete packages and temporary files accumulated after updates.
  • Index management and metadata editing. Displays all indexes contained in a WIM file with their details: name, description, size, architecture, creation date, and number of revisions. Lets you edit descriptive properties (name, description) and change the bootable flag for each index.
  • Image export and merging. Exports specific indexes from one WIM file to another, optimizing storage by eliminating duplicate data. Also merges several WIM files into one, combining different indexes into a single container without losing structural integrity.
  • Integrity checking and safe mounting. Runs integrity checks on WIM files to detect data corruption. Implements a locking mount system to prevent simultaneous modifications that could damage the image, and lets you validate the internal structure of the file before proceeding with critical operations.
  • WIMBoot image support. Prepares and manages images designed for the Windows Image Boot (WIMBoot) feature, which allows systems to boot from compressed WIM files, saving space on devices with limited storage. Includes specific options for creating and maintaining this type of configuration.
  • Report and script export. Generates detailed reports in text or XML format covering the current image configuration, installed packages, present drivers, and system features. It can also export the equivalent DISM commands for each operation performed, simplifying documentation and automation through scripts.

Development of DISMTools was started in 2023 by the independent developer known as CodingWonders, who saw the need for a visual layer on top of DISM, a powerful but complex command-line tool. The project is written primarily in Visual Basic .NET and uses the .NET framework to ensure compatibility with native Windows libraries and efficient access to imaging APIs. Since its first release on GitHub, the application has evolved by incorporating feedback from the IT Pro community and system administration enthusiasts, keeping functional fidelity to the original DISM as its core philosophy without simplifying or omitting critical parameters.
