  • Pattern editor. Create and edit sequences of musical notes in a tracker-like format. Each NES audio channel (2 pulse, triangle, noise and DMC) is managed separately, with the ability to adjust parameters such as volume, pitch and effects.
  • Audio expansion support. Includes emulation of additional sound chips such as VRC6, VRC7, FDS, MMC5, Namco 163 and Sunsoft 5B, expanding your composing possibilities beyond the standard NES audio.
  • Song sequencer. Arrange patterns on a timeline to structure complete songs with repeats, jumps and tempo changes.
  • Customizable instruments. Provides tools to define instruments with volume, pitch and duty cycle envelopes, replicating the behavior of the original hardware.
  • Note effects. Includes effects such as slides, vibrato, arpeggios and tempo changes, which can be applied to individual notes or entire sections.
  • NSF export. Generates files in NSF format, compatible with emulators and with real NES hardware via NSF-capable players or flash cartridges, preserving the fidelity of the original sound.
  • Conversion to modern formats. Export songs to WAV, MP3 or MIDI for use in other projects or playback on modern devices.
  • MIDI import. Load MIDI files and convert them into FamiStudio projects, making it easier to switch from other music software.
  • Piano roll interface. Displays notes in a piano roll layout, with options to visually edit durations, positions and velocities.
  • MIDI controller support. Connect physical MIDI keyboards to record notes directly into your project.
  • Waveform visualization. Displays the waveforms generated by the audio channels, helping you spot mixing issues or clipping.
  • DMC sample editing. Provides tools to import and edit samples on the DMC channel, used for percussion effects or digitized sounds.

FamiStudio was developed by Mathieu Gauthier (also known as BleuBleu) and was first released in 2018. The program is written in C# and uses a custom OpenGL-based interface that runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. Audio emulation relies on native code to ensure accuracy. Over the years, the project has received updates that add support for expansion chips, interface improvements and new export features. Development is still active, with regular bug fixes and optimizations.
