  • Instant font activation. FontBase allows you to activate and deactivate any font with a single click. This feature eliminates the need to permanently install fonts on the operating system, reducing resource load. Activated fonts are immediately available in all applications, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or Sketch.
  • Live text preview. When typing in the sample field, all fonts in the visible collection update their rendering instantly. This dynamic preview applies the typed text to all loaded typefaces, showing differences in glyphs, spacing, and styles.
  • Direct font comparison. The pinning feature allows you to anchor a specific font at the top of the window while browsing the rest of the library. This method enables visual comparison of characters, weights, and proportions between the pinned font and any other in the list.
  • Collection management. The user can create custom font groups to organize them by project, client, or typographic style. Collections function independently of the file system's organization, allowing the same font to belong to multiple groups without duplicating files.
  • Real-time search. The filtering system responds to each character typed in the search bar, progressively narrowing down the list of displayed fonts. The search operates on family names, styles, typographic classifications, and file metadata.
  • Configurable text styles. It is possible to modify the size, color, line spacing, alignment, and background color of the preview text. These settings apply globally to all visible fonts, providing a consistent viewing context for typographic evaluation.
  • Support for OpenType features. The application recognizes and applies advanced typographic features present in modern fonts, such as ligatures, old-style figures, small caps, alternate glyph forms, and tabular figures. These options are activated through specific controls in the interface.
  • Sync with Typekit/Adobe Fonts. FontBase integrates with Adobe's subscription service, displaying families synchronized through Creative Cloud. These fonts appear in a dedicated collection and can be activated and deactivated just like local fonts.
  • Custom keyboard shortcuts. The main navigation and operation of the application respond to predefined key combinations. The shortcuts cover actions like activating/deactivating fonts, changing display size, pinning fonts for comparison, and switching between collections.
  • Automatic updates. The update mechanism downloads and installs new software versions without manual user intervention. This process keeps the application up-to-date with the latest security patches, bug fixes, and feature additions.
  • Favorites marking. Any font can be added to a special favorites list, accessible from any collection or search view. This system allows quick access to frequently used typefaces without needing to remember their original location.
  • Duplicate font detection. The internal scanner identifies identical font files or those with matching metadata in different system locations. This function helps clean up font libraries, eliminating redundancies and freeing up storage space.
  • Full-screen mode. The interface can expand to occupy all available monitor space, maximizing the viewing area for type samples. This mode is suitable for presentations or intensive font selection sessions.

FontBase was initially developed by Dominik Levitsky and launched in 2016. The project began as a solution to font management problems in digital design workflows. The software is primarily built with modern web technologies, using Electron as the desktop application framework, which allows the use of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in its interface and business logic.
