  • Procedural modeling with scripting. IceSL includes a Lua-based scripting language for generating 3D geometry through code. Users can create complex shapes with algorithms and change parameters dynamically, without manual modeling.
  • High-precision slicing. The slicing engine converts 3D models into instructions for 3D printers. Supports multiple infill strategies and customizable patterns.
  • Mesh repair tools. IceSL detects and fixes common problems in 3D models such as holes, inverted normals, or non-manifold geometry. This helps ensure files are ready for printing.
  • Multi-material support. Lets you assign different materials or properties to specific areas of the model. This is essential for printers with multiple extruders.
  • Print simulation. Shows a detailed preview of the printing process, including toolhead movements, material changes, and estimated time per layer.
  • Support structure generation. Creates optimized supports for complex geometry with configurable density and patterns. Supports can be edited manually if needed.
  • Export to standard formats. Supports formats such as STL and OBJ for models, and machine-specific output such as G-code. Export settings are highly customizable.
  • Advanced visualization. Offers viewing modes for analyzing the model, including layer view, print speed, and wall thickness. This helps identify potential problems before printing.
  • Material parameter library. Contains predefined settings for various filaments, letting you adjust temperature, speed, and other parameters to suit the material used.
  • Optimization tools. Includes functions for reducing the weight of a model while maintaining structural strength, such as lattice structure generation and wall thickness adjustment.
  • Per-layer parameter control. Lets you change settings such as layer height, speed, or temperature in specific zones of the model to improve quality or reduce print time.
  • Hardware integration. Supports direct communication with some 3D printers to send jobs and monitor print progress from within the software.

IceSL was originally developed at Inria (the French National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology) by the Manao research team, and later by the Inria Matter team in Nancy. The project began around 2012 as an academic tool for research in digital fabrication. It is written primarily in C++, with Lua used for the scripting layer. Development continues with updates that add new modeling capabilities and improvements to the slicing process.
