  • Processing with djpeg. Uses the IJG djpeg tool as an internal JPEG decoder. This component transforms JPEG files to BMP format for internal processing, maintaining maximum fidelity to the original data during decoding.
  • Encoding with cjpeg. Implements a modified version of the IJG cjpeg encoder. This patched version allows precise adjustments to compression and format parameters during JPEG file creation.
  • Lossless transformations. Incorporates a modified version of IJG jpegtran, allowing operations such as rotation, cropping, and other geometric transformations without recompression, thus preserving the original image quality.
  • Comparative analysis. Executes a specialized process to compare two BMP images, generating detailed difference maps that show pixel-level variations between the two images.
  • Thumbnail extraction. Recovers embedded thumbnails from JPEG files through direct analysis of the file structure, without relying on Exif metadata.
  • Marker auditing. Examines and modifies the internal markers of the JPEG file, allowing low-level technical interventions in the file structure.
  • Structural repair. Attempts to reconstruct damaged JPEG files through marker structure analysis and selective recovery of image segments.
  • Conversion between JPEG variants. Transforms images between different JPEG subformats (baseline, progressive, lossless) through controlled re-encoding processes.
  • Technical report generation. Produces detailed documentation on the internal structure of the JPEG file, including quantization tables, color components, and encoding parameters.
  • Selective component extraction. Isolates and extracts individual color channels or specific image components for independent analysis.

Development of Jpegcoll began in 2018 as a specialized tool for forensic image analysis. The program's core is written in C++ for low-level JPEG file handling, using the IJG libraries as a base. The image comparison and report generation components were implemented in Python. The current version integrates the standard IJG tools (djpeg, cjpeg, jpegtran) with specific modifications to extend their functionality in the field of technical image analysis.
